"Gates calls for Guantanamo closure"

POSTED: 9:36 p.m. EDT, March 29, 2007

"Lawmakers said Thursday the Guantanamo facility hurts U.S. credibility with its allies. They asked that Gates give more thought to how it could be closed and detainees moved to a military prison.

"I hope that we can work to find some way to correct this problem, because as you say, it is a stain on our reputation and we can't afford it," said Rep. David Obey, D-Wisconsin.

Of the 385 detainees at Guantanamo, fewer than 100 would be considered hard-core, Gates said. He said he assumes there would be room in the military prison system for them.

But he said he did not know if using the military brigs would allow the U.S. to keep the detainees over the long term.

He noted that the U.S. is struggling to return several hundred of the detainees to their home countries, but those nations do not want them."

Vendaval:
I read with much curiosity the last paragraph of your post that the government is trying to return several hundred of the prisoners at Gitmo to their countries of origin but those countries don't want them....somehow that does not have the ring of truth to me...but then I have been lied to by the govenment before.

Hi thompson,

I think that very interesting too.  I will have to read more about
the specifics before making an informed opinion on the subject.

Enjoy your day, [:)]

It doesn't seem that unreasonable to me.  Also in the past many detainees have been scared of being returned to there home country for fear of being held in conditions far worse than Gitmo.

Why does it not seem unreasonable to you?  Oh wait being in prison guarded by a bunch of jarheads is fun...what was I thinking.  See if you can find someone who has done time in Portsmouth NP...they may have a different position than you vis-a-vis prison and marine guards.
Your link to the Washington Post does not work for some reason.

I'd like to say on behalf of the British people that those detainees who fought AGAINST the allies and that were taken to Guantanamo bay are indeed traitors and should be given then death penalty, its our only regret they were not shot on the battle field instead of taken and treated like humans beings which they most certainly arent!

bludemonn:
You don't think it the least bit arrogant that you should speak for the entire nation of Great Britian without checking with them first?
How does fighting against the allies make someone a traitor?  We did invade their country.
Did someone die and appoint you to be god to decide who is human and who is not?
It would appear that if the U.S. wishes to release these people they are  guilty of nothing so why do you want to kill people who are guilty of nothing?
You seem like a very mean spirited person.  Did someone kick your dog this morning?
You seem quite interested in killing perhaps you might consider joining her majesties forces and directing your energies against the armed insurgents or are you only bloodthirsty against those without arms.
