Totalmaster4you -> Hijacking topics (3/31/2007 3:53:48 PM)

I went back to look at an old post because there were some new entries on it. Almost all of the new ones were a three way conversation about an offshoot topic. OMG I've been post-jacked. I've seen this a number of times so why can't these folks write directly to each other to show how wise and funny they are?

AquaticSub -> RE: Hijacking topics (3/31/2007 4:43:32 PM)

Personally - I think that if the topic is strong enough then it will always go back. That is what it's been in my experience. It the topic wasn't strong enough, well.. oh well.

Some people like an audience for their witty banter - i see it happen in a lot of threads. Usually someone brings it back on topic.

velvetears -> RE: Hijacking topics (3/31/2007 6:04:39 PM)

Disgruntled thread starters who don't want people walking off the beaten path of their thread?  No sense wasting energy in opposing something you have absolutely 0 control over

domiguy -> RE: Hijacking topics (3/31/2007 6:35:09 PM)

Has the government made any progress in being able to control hurricanes?

I know they have implemented early detection buoys for tsunamis...Any progress on hurricanes...I'm worried.

Totalmaster4you -> RE: Hijacking topics (3/31/2007 7:19:41 PM)

Lorelei115 -> RE: Hijacking topics (3/31/2007 7:21:02 PM)

I read a story once (Microcosmic God) which opened with a "quote."

If I can remember it, it went something like as follows.

"Scientists put a monkey into a box and gave him 4 ways to escape.  The monkey found a 5th way out."

The problem with many people who post is that they are giving human beings only 4 ways out of the thread, and then become upset when the people who post find a 5th way out.

I imagine it must be difficult for people who start a thread to prove how smart they think they are and end up getting outsmarted by random people in cyberspace.

Just me, could be wrong, but there you go.

Sinergy

Frankly I don't see what you are so grumpy about. If a thread moves in a different direction then it means whatever group of people who were there talking about it got bored of the subject and found something more interesting. Like a conversation in real life. If whatever topic you posted was interesting enough, the conversatinon will drift back.

For that matter, I really don't view this on the level of Simon Cowell. He's far more annoying.

or what else can also happen is that one thought leads to another seemingly unrelated topic... But maybe I'm the only one that can start a conversation about the state of agriculture in america and wrap it up with the best deals in this weeks PC flyer

Totalmaster4you -> RE: Hijacking topics (3/31/2007 10:27:59 PM)

Since some of you have deigned to answer and ask thoughtful questions I thought I'd respect you and answer.
To lorelei- of course I expected the witty wannabees but I got a chance to to vent which I enjoyed.
To Sinergy- It's not that I would like people to only do things in a prescribed way but rather they respect the op who usually is asking a very sincere question and needs help or information.
To AquaticSub- I have no problem when a subject takes a turn but that is not what I spoke about. There are those who are so busy congratulating themselves and friends and having conversations on a post where someone sought help. Something they can do by writing each other directly and not distracting from someone else. As one responder said quite rightly they probably need(nay crave) an audiance. Pointing out when people are disrespectful is an opportunity for people that don't like it to point at the perpatraitors and laugh at them.
To those that wrote sincerely, thankyou, to the rest get a life.

Hmmm, I am wondering how come you are stating that people need to get a life when you are the one that seems to be obsessing about disrespect on internet message boards. I have made more than a few threads in my time, I have hijacked my own threads, and to be honest I do not feel I was disrespecting myself because of it.

People have the right to post whatever it is they like on this message board as long as it conforms to the terms of service for collarmechat. To suggest that they should conform to your specifications is disrespectful also in my opinion. People post, they get advice, feedback, input... some of it they want, some of it they do not, some of it they are neutral about... the threads really belong to CM, not to the individuals that created the thread, not to others that post to the thread, they belong to CM... therefore it seems logical to me that the only entity that matters as far as respect would be the people that run CM.

Personally I am more than capable to bypass posts that annoy me... most people are more than capable of doing this. I am one of these people that enjoy the personal banter on CM. Some of these people are witty and they make me laugh. As long as they are not hurting anyone why is making people laugh a disrespectful thing? I find laughter it much better medicine than anything I could impart on this message board of a serious nature. Most people need to lighten the fuck up, man.

What Julia said.

Also being one of these thread hijackers you refer to i'd just like apologise and say i have been a bad girl and will never do it again.
If anyone can think of a  fitting punishment for my crimes please fel free to make your suggestion here. [:D]
