Today I came across a Wikipedia article about Centralia. Have anyone went there? How is it? Man... why don't the authorities take advantage from it? I mean it is source of heat(energy).

Went to lunch with an old buddy of mine. He just got off a job up by Mt. Lassen where he was doing the non-destructive testing of thermoelectric power lines.

H2SO4 tends to eat away at the pipes pretty dramatically, and he has to verify pipe thicknesses to make sure they dont explode.

Toxic fumes can be overcome...

Most likely due to the unpredictability of the fire. Who knows where or what will collapse when? Tough to build infrastructure in that area.

They capped geysers. Relatively low pressure geothermal steam is piped from the geyser to turn a turbine to generate energy.

H2SO4 eats away at the pipes, so he tests to make sure they are not losing thickness. When they do, the company replaces them. Then he goes and tests new pipes.

Not sure what building you are referring to...

to my knwwledge 5 families stayed. the town itslef qualfied for a new road. the fire is underground. roads leading to this place that no one goes to have an amazing amount of debris on the roadway. i know stuff can fly off thje truck...i had stopped the car and got out. grabage every where..and a ghost town feeling.

This fire is burning in VEINS of coal... other towns have had to be relocated... in this day and age and with the exhausting of known oil reserves... well, sad that current tech is not up to this (or perhaps the pointy hairs which have power over any remedies are... well... pointy hairs)
