hisannabelle -> RE: What's with all the labels? (4/5/2007 1:38:14 PM)

greetings totalmaster4you, labels are our way of trying to communicate certain things about ourselves to other people. because different people have different definitions of certain things, this often ends up being a messy process. it's the only one we have, though. in some general kinds of ways it does work; after all, if we didn't have those nifty dominant/master/switch/slave/submissive identifiers, how would people who enjoy being in a position of authority in a relationship find people who enjoy giving up their authority in a relationship? it'd be just one big jumble of profiles. i think the labels a person chooses for themself does show something about them, though; people who get hung up on hyphenated americanism, for example, often do it because they are trying to be overly politically correct or because they are trying to preserve/reconnect with the heritage they originally came from. the problem with labels is when people get hung up on them and look at them as a be-all end-all. labels are a sophisticated example of the way that language is used as a whole. we use words like "tree" and "chair" to denote matter in certain states of being so that we can adequately communicate with each other; we use words like "slave" and "submissive" for the same reasons. of course, there are all kinds of trees and chairs, just as there are all kinds of slaves and submissives, so i think it's important to recognize how getting caught up in labels can cause just as much havoc as simple linguistic miscommunication, in much the same way. respectfully, annabelle.
