I thought it would be interesting to see what the worst gifts are that people have ever gotten and if there is a story behind why its especially SO bad (for example if someone gets you something that seems nice but for YOU its terrible and they should know)...

For me personally... while I appreciate the thought behind the concept of gift giving... I have gotten some terrible gifts. The worst thing ever was a box of MOTH BALLS on my birthday. It was from a current boyfriend I was dating (vanilla) years ago and I just couldn't believe he'd select that as a birthday gift. Perhaps as a thoughtful everyday sort of thing it wouldn't have been so bad as it was- it was the most disappointing thing ever. Now its sort of a running joke between my friends and I... to this day when someone asks me what I want for my birthday or a holiday, I occasionally say "Anything but moth balls."

A crock pot and a vacuum, both on the same X-mas. Which would not have been bad had there been something else but there wasn't. Granted I needed them but it was not a particularly romantic gift.

My great aunt used to give embroidered hankies and toilet water that always got stuck in a drawer never to be seen again. She was a southern belle and assumed that all young ladies needed such things.

Hey Nic

Xmas when I was 11, after watching my sister unwrap a sewing machine from our paternal grandmother I began to unwrap my own rather large box, the front of which pictured a rather impressive stereo system. Whooot! Yeah!

Inside I discovered an oddly mismatched collection of very badly hand crotcheted items such as a toilet paper roll cover, a toaster cover, a blender cover etc. What 11 year old owns any of those things, seriously??? Last but not least a rather strange long strip of crochet with little pockets each containing a single quarter adding up to $1.75. wtf??? Then at the bottom of the box I discover a card adressed " to Grammy, Love Julie  xmas 1976". The witch regifted the things my cousin Julie (aged 9) had made for her the year before. It still irks me to this day that I had to write her a thank you card for her lovely and thoughtful gift.

At this age all i ever want for my birthday is maybe a Dvd and a new pair of sneakers...i go through a lot of sneakers.
One year my husband told me to go ahead and buy my own sneakers and he would pay me back.....he never did....the divorce was final in February....

Elderly people can be very strange about gift giving, whether it be senility or funds or just strange.  i remember about age 8, my paternal grandmother having me follow her around the house with a basket while she chose things off her shelves to give people.  i thought it was very strange then....my Mother is in a nursing home now and gives us things of her's she knows we would like with sentimental value...there is a big difference.

Probably the most annoying gifts are from my aunt, who sends me fudge for a Christmas gift, yet is perpetually harping at me about my weight problem.  I have requested that she please not do this, but she isn't a paricularly good listener.

The other worst gift I got was a dictionary from an ex-boyfriend.  While practical, I took it as a signal that the relationship was in serious trouble and I wasn't wrong.

Now I remember where that coffee mug came from, (the one I recently broke and tossed,) I was trying to figure out where I acquired it. Duh.  This topic brought that memory back.  So I recall a longgggg time ago a guy I was dating handed  me, a gift wrapped, souvenir coffee mug, he had picked.  That was my wonderful birthday present he so thoughtfully chose to bring back to me after he had gone out of town to attended a baseball game.    Rosa

My mom keeps getting me make up and jewlery and music, and while they're not horrid she knows I don't like makeup and she knows I don't wear jewlery, and music is so personal and subjective it's hard to get music right, because while I may like jewel, I do not like *all* her albums.

A Mickey Mouse beach towel...which I actually would have enjoyed as a gift and I actually do still have it (after 15 years)...but it killed Valentine's Day.

Gold jewelry, purchased by my ex, given to me as a gift from my kids.  He knows that I never wear gold jewelry.  Never.

Three years ago on Christmas this was the distribution of gifts from my grandmother...
My 4 cousins...a laptop, mp3 player, stereo, xbox
My sister...a new entertainment center
Me...socks and a wallet
I'm seeing a slight difference in both cost and usefulness.

I got a pair of rubber gloves for Christmas one year.  His reasoning...they had pink swirls, and I like pink.

One Valentines day, this guy in my 8th grade class gave me one of those carnations that you buy in middle school that have the little tube of water at the end. But instead of handing it to me, he says "here, catch" and throws it about 3 feet away from me so that it landed on the ground and the tube of water broke.
