when you use the term "session"?

It's a very confusing word to me; it carries (for me) a connotation of a visit with professional.

What IS it, other than a word that I don't use?

It typically involves two or more musicians.

At least that is what I've been told (???).

Well, there is the professional connotation, but outside that; it means a time to be devoted to exploring whatever it is You and your partner explore. we could meet for a coffee or i could drive for 4 hours for a session. That session might only be a coffee but it would still be time devoted to our D/S relationship

I don't use the term session except in the context of professionally arranged time. In more personal relationship, whether in or out, I consider other time to be either a "scene" or "playtime" if play is involved. If play is not involved it is simply "service" time in the case of a live-out, or normal D/s or M/s life if a live-in.
I know some people do, or assume that any time with a FemDom is a "session", but I am not comfortable with that as a catch-all phrase.

one definition that comes up

A meeting devoted to a particular activity

Seems perfectly fitting & doesn't denote any professional connotations.

I have used session, scene & play but most often I say interaction.

Some people might call it bumping uglies & be perfectly correct in doing so.

(have to use an angel since I can't find a halo)

I think generally it's when you and another person lay a encounter of sensation or control down pretty heavy.
For example sitting on the couch with your date or mate watching TV's not scening, but if your mate's playing with you with dildos, clamps, ropes, his/her hands, giving you orders that control your actions or being the one controlling the other by making them move in certain ways etc... things like that would turn the time in front of the TV into a scene.
Basically I'd venture to say it's when the sensual exchange or Energy Exchange dynamics is the core focus of how you're relating to each other at the moment in BDSM sensation ways.

I only use it when I'm training to refer to those 2-4 hours of focused work.

Otherwise if I'm talking about SM I'll say "scene" or "play".

The rest of the time is just my life though so I don't distinguish it from other moments with my slave.

I actually don't use "session" either. Dunno why, its just never found its way into my BDSM lexicon. If it were to find its way there though, I would probably use it in a context where there is a set amount of time that I am spending with someone to accomplish a purpose. ie- As Tammyjo said, an hour or two hours where I am focused on training someone, or an hour where I am attempting to leave as many bruises and cane welts as possible.
