Missty, I know exactly how you feel.
I had a winning bid on a Diamond and Sapphire ring at Bidz dot com, but they could not get it to the size I needed. It was valued at $169 and I won it for $14. With shipping, and tax it came to right at $25.
It got here, looked odd, but not like the picture, I took it to a jeweler to have it sized. The ring shank did not match the picture of the one I bid on, it was too thin, so they had to reshank the ring. The major stone was supposed to be a sapphire, the jeweler said it could be but he doubts it for a sapphire of that color is rare and the ring would be valued at over $500 if it was, more than likely it was an aquamarine which would make the initial ring value if the shank was the right size about $149. Okay, reshanking would cost me $45.00, normally would have been $75.00 but he was cutting me a deal, so I was still ahead, and with the amount and the higher quality of gold it was actually going to raise the value to above $200.
But then he showed me the stone setting, it was horrible, the stone was crooked, the prongs did not even touch the stone in one place, and when they went to repair it one prong broke when he first touched it without any pressure at all. If I had given the ring as it was the stone would have fallen out in less than a week.
So my $25.00 bargain added another $101.00 to repair it, but now it has a value of $229.00. If it had been the sapphire like it should be then it would be another $20, and if it is the rare color sapphire, which I doubt considering the shoddy workmanship then it is over $550 now... I still got a bargain, but I had thought I would be spending about $50.00 total, not $126.00.... Thank God I won $200 on a lottery ticket or I would not have even considered getting it in the first place, but now I have nothing left for the nice dinner... lol..
