I received so much good advice from my last question, I thought I'd try y'all again. I'm a divorced dad with 4 kids at home....My oldest is 19, self sufficient with a full time job in construction, a doctor has written him a prescription for the medical use of marijuana to treat a medical condition he has suffered with since he was 15. I live in a state that has voted to oppose the fed govt and allow docs this tool in their practice. His employer accepts the use of MJ when prescribed by a licensed physician.

The house rules are clear....NO Illegal DRUGS and only those 21 can consume alcohol. Rules I know that he has respected while at the house....Now away from the house I'm sure that he has at least occasionally had both. But all in all he is responsible and follows the rules I've set.

Now you all have to know my dilemma by now....He has been in pain for 4 years....he says that it brings him relief and allows him to sleep......a legitimate licensed doctor is treating him....the State sanctions this activity.....there are other drugs that he has tried, who am I to say what brings him the most relief with the least side effects.

Would you allow this activity in your home considering there are three younger siblings (10,13,16)?

If you would allow it, what rules or preconditions would you require?

There is a pill form of medical marijuana. You take the pill and it relieves some of the problems for which it was precribed. The THC has been removed. Consult a physician.

I'm not a parent, but one of my mottos is "The truth will set you free." I think that being frank about drugs is far better than using scare tactics or being sanctimonious. If your kids are sophisticated enough, I would try to explain to them how the classifications of drugs are government-made. We have the legal, over the counter drugs: alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, NyQuil, etc. Then we have everything else. Some drugs in the "everything else" category are legal when a doctor prescribes them. Marijuana is one of those.

Then you can try to educate them about the war on drugs. For various political reasons, certain drugs are considered most evil. We place them under the popular title "illegal drugs." These include marijuana, cocaine, heroin, crack, ecstasy, speed, and LSD. The D.A.R.E. types will talk to you about illegal drugs in black and white terms. Legal drugs are all more or less tolerable when you use them responsibly (even tobacco use won't bring about the end of days). Illegal drugs are simply all bad.

But it's not that simple, boys and girls. Marijuana is a drug that can be used at least as responsibly as alcohol, and it is far less dangerous to the user and the people around him. As long as alcohol and cigarettes are legal, none of the arguments against marijuana use make any sense. However, just as it is illegal to use alcohol when you're under 21, it is illegal to use marijuana without a prescription - at any age. Therefore, don't do either of those things until such time as the law changes.

It might help you to look at it this way, faithfulasst. Don't think about marijuana as some kind of supernatural force of evil. Think of it as just another prescription drug, like morphine or Viagra. Both are for sale on the street, but both are considered perfectly legitimate for use (even in a house with children) when a doctor prescribes them.

Yes.

No smoking in the same room as or with the younger siblings.

There is indeed a "pill" form. The THC has NOT, been "removed", it is synthetic. It does not have the same efficacy as the real thing.

quote:

MARINOLĀ® (dronabinol) is a synthetic version of a naturally occurring compound known as delta-9-THC. Delta-9-THC stimulates appetite and reduces nausea and vomiting by binding to special receptors found in your nervous system. http://www.marinol.com/marinol02.html

this slave has known personally more than one person who got no relief from the synthetic form, yet DID get relief from the effects of chemotherapy from smoking or eating the real thing. One can make "pot butter" and use it to make cookies, brownies, etc. This has been reported to be just as effective as smoking it without the harmful effects of "smoking".
