It is not that people suck, people are predictable, in other words no one expects to see a world class violinist playing like a common street performer, so he does not come into their reality. We preceive reality not how it really is, but instead we preceive it the way we expect it to be.

I love street performers, and some of them in San Francisco are indeed talented enough to do many other things. They add a lot to The City

Location, location, location.  Classical music is nice, but a lot of people don't like it.  My guess is the reporter who staged the event got exactly the story he wanted and could have gotten an entirely different one by choosing a different station.

I've done a bit of street theater when my vehicle let me down, far from home, and you don't make any money by feeding the audience what is good for them, whether they like it or not.

For most people, art needs a context and quality needs pointing out, very few people are willing to believe their own senses without some validation from someone they believe to be an expert.

I remember driving to Brittany in France once and stopped for lunch and then a stroll. I went into a ancient Romanesque Church and I couldn't believe my eyes, on the wll was a Rembrandt painting of a crucifixion. For a long while I refused to believe it could be a Rembrandt hanging there waiting for someone to take it off the wall and walk out with it. I went and found the caretaker and asked him if it was really a Rembrandt. He said yes and I was the first person to inquire about it in ten years, most people just think its a fake which is why he guessed, it had never been stolen. When I got back to Paris, I checked in the national library and it was indeed a Rembrandt. I just couldn't believe it until it was verified, despite the painting's obvious quality.

I guess it just goes to show how caught up people are in their daily lives. Still, there were a few people who stopped. Maybe there's hope after all. I would have loved to have been a tourist there on that day. :)

It would be interesting to set up the same experiment in different locations and times.  If he was playing on a bike/walking trail in a nice city park on a summer Sunday afternoon, don't you think he would get a much differnt reaction.  I found his reaction to not being automatically prevalidated to be interesting.  Heck I am not very good at guitar, and can usually get at least 5 people an hour to stop and talk to me when I play guitar next to our Coastal Trail.
