During my morning paper reading I found an interesting alliance. The National Organization of Woman sided with the FDA in wanting to keep silicon implants off the market for general use. I think this is an interesting position. One of the basic platforms of NOW is the "Our Bodies - Our Decision". It's the primary tenant of their "Pro Choice" position. Yet in this case, they want the FDA to prohibit a woman's right to choose between two options. Both currently considered "safe".

It's an interesting side bar to note that for years the FDA has allowed silicon to be used in breast implant for woman who have undergone a mastectomy. Putting those facts together and it appears that NOW thinks its fine if someone else decides that a woman can have silicon breasts it's okay. But a woman independent of having cancer can not make that choice.

And of course this points out another reason why the FDA and the AMA aren't to be blindly trusted. Remember if aspirin was introduced today as a new drug it would NOT get approval.

Other than "that's politics."

I think for too long the NOW political agenda has been focused on the idea that in order to be on equal standing of men we must somehow try to be as much like men as possible, and thus any traditional method previously used to keep women subjugated must be destroyed (things like strip clubs, prostitution, submission).

But I'm intentionally uneducated on a lot of political agendas, personally think silicone implants are a bad choice (they have good saline ones), and don't expect prostutition to become a respected and valued career for at least a few generations.

I am not familar with the issue so I welcome information, but I don't think NOW wants to ban all breast implants do they? Isn't it only silicone gel that they oppose? Wouldn't this allow women freedom to choose saline implants?

I dunno... if a consumer group says something is unsafe and a industry group says it *is* safe it seems perfectly reasonable to debate the matter. Isn't this that what Ralph Nader did in his classic book "Unsafe at Any Speed" where he exposed the safety problems of the Corvair?

Silicone implants were taken off the market a number of years ago. Many woman when through the pain and expense of having them replaced with saline. Now, after years of study and I'm sure improvements in the materials used, the FDA wants to allow for choice NOW is lobbying against it.

Not to be a smart ass but....

Where are the advocacy groups for men's health issues? I don't see anyone coming out in the paper against penile implants, etc. Women on the whole tend to get the brunt of this kind of advocacy work and I find it a little tiresome after a while.

It's always woman's health, and usually intimate in nature. Silicon was said to rupture and travel through the body. It was a containment issue more than a 'silicon' issue, in that they couldn't find a container (fake boob) that could guarentee that the silicon wouldn't leak through and cause tissue damage and there was evidence that it caused cancers I think. So, maybe they've developed a new material that will house the silicon and insure that it won't leak, seep, travel, etc.

Penile implants haven't been accused of causing auto-immune disorders, cancer, connective tissue disorders, etc. While I agree with your position on the directed advocacy, I think you're comparing apples and oranges in this instance.

New fillers and new casings have been developed to placate the US health agencies. Whether or not the new silicone implants are any "safer" than the ones that were banned in the US is anyone's guess. Whether they were ever any more dangerous than saline implants to begin with is another matter entirely.

That was what I was thinking when I posted this. Imagine men being told they can't use Viagra? Every time I see the commercial on TV I imagine all those men out there with their 36 hour hard-ons proudly bringing donuts to their wifes without needing their hands! "Damn Herb, you took one of those god damn pecker pills again!".

Then again lets look at the way the sexes approach the shoe issue.

Men - 3 pair (Brown/Black/sneakers) or 4 for lifestyle guys or bikers - Boots.

Woman - Minimum 20-30

Merc you forgot the fact that some men would rather increase their risk of heart attack by taking viagra than not be able to get it up, lol...
So these safety issues are definitely more apropos for women.
I wonder if NOW polled women on what they think/would like.. M
