Has anyone used fans in a scene before? The type of fan I'm talking about is a silk folding fan (like this one). I have used them closed for massage (on the shoulders and upper back, very lightly on the neck and lower back, as well as on the thighs and arms), and for punishment (a quick pop with a closed fan is a sharp reminder), but I would like to use them in a scene also. I know how to do figure 8's with one fan or two, how to twirl it, how to spin it in the air, and how to 'pop' it (open it with such force that it makes a large crack that is sometimes startlingly loud, much like the crack of a whip). But other than closed, I am not sure how to hit accurately without causing harm, so I'm looking for others who might do this or something similar.

I use fans with two bases: wood and plastic. The wood fan is very light, easy to manuever, but is for light massage and fancy twirling only (they break a lot easier, and I certainly wouldn't want one to splinter on anyone). The plastic fan is a bit heavier, but sturdier and can be used to hit a lot harder. I have not broken one yet, and I have no worries that unless I hit very hard, I will not break the plastic spokes. But they hit a lot harder, and are not really usable for anything but heavy massage and hard hits, other than pretty twirls and very loud cracks (much louder than the wood one). I want to use a metal one in the future, such as a tessen,  perhaps with sharp blades/razors on a couple of the spokes for bloodplay, but I have not yet found one that was exactly what I wanted, and since the metal fans can be much more expensive, I do not want to buy one that isn't exactly what I want.

So I'm curious if anyone uses fan in scenes? If so, what advice might you have for someone who would like to better her skills in the use of the fan?

I do, because they are regularly part of my costumes.  I'd say with something like a fan, just experiment.  Start out slow and then build up over time.  Use them for sensation, they can be dragged over the skin- I have peacock feather fans, marabou fans, lace fans, plastic, cardboard, all of those can provide a wide range of sensations to mix in with the straight up inpact stuff.

Yes, many types and materials; sensation play and temp. play, can be used in sens-dep. too.

My peacock feather fan is one of my favorite toys.  It can be sensual, sadistic (don't laugh, even people who aren't ticklish can be made so with the fan), and even utilitarian as it isn't uncommon for someone to get hot and sticky.  You can have them fan you or you can fan them.  It can also be fun if it is cold to really chill them using alcohol or water and then chill them with the fan and then press your own hot body against them, VERY sensual and powerful.

It is getting a bit old and tired, anyone know of a great source for fans?

I have used fans before in play for a variety of uses.
Combined with hot wax play to add a cooling effect...
At times to beat air into the face... caress the body
with.  I will close up the fan.. and use it to prod or
stoke between the legs... even a closed fan to spank
some.. then reopen it to caress... have combined it
with a little ice play even. 

I've been thinking about what it would be like using
a little heated lotion or KY self heating gel on the
body.   Also a fan might be a great means for controlling
the flicker of candle flames in a room as well..

I have taken a open fan and pricked the breast area
as well as folds of legs... It's fun to experiment with
at times..

Dear damia, Ladies and Gentlemen;
 
I do use hand fans, some modern and rarely vintage.  They do provide their own additions to the scene as well as the senses.
 
I use gloves in the same manner.  A Lady's accessories can serve many purposes other then it's intended purposes.
 
I would caution though--these fans aren't meant for impact and not always are the flaws in wood, plastic, tin and or other materials manifest.  Just know there are risks and consequences in those risks.
 
Just a few of my favorite uses for fans (staying on topic):
Cooling self, the victim; to wave heat from fire play into a direction on the body, face--where flames dare not go; to drag against the skin and or genitals; to create a breeze for a scent I release via spray, such as perfume or man's aftershave and or scents for candles (making them); to caress in between fingers, behind the ears, nape of neck, buttock's cheek cracks, over the anus and over the vaginal area, the underside of the breasts, testicals and phallus, the under arms, arm pits, neck and throat, the nipple's tips..the mons area; behind the knee and between toes, the arch and instep. Closed to slap the genital areas and to tap on piercings on genitals, taking two fans create a scissor sensation of two movements at once.  These are just a few of my favorite things to do--There could be more added.
 
Moisten the fan in water, let it freeze and then use.  Wax the fan and it takes on a different character.  Spritz perfume on the fan--it helps with offensive odors for some who are sensitive to smoker's smoking products.  Plus, there are always the fan's codes holding a conversation.
 
Just some thoughts.

The one missing use I see glaring so far is needles or clothspins with feathers glued on them and moved by air currents created and timmed by a sadist  using the fans.

I've watched several scenes of this type and they were HOOOOT.

The tugging on either needles or clothspins moved this way changes the feeling.
