Laughing is a human defense mechanism, at the very heart of it.  We laugh so that we don't cry.  That's what this piece is evoking, I suspect.

I don't get how somebody wouldn't find the juxtaposition of one of the most happy-go-lucky pop culture icons singing one of the most depressing songs ever funny. *giggles and shrugs*
