Tuomas -> Economic impact of border control. (4/10/2007 11:21:48 AM)

So, I was reading an intersting article in La Tercera, about the effects the immigration controls imposed in the US in 2001 have had on the country.

According to Charles Merlin of the Business Traveler's Roundtable, and James Carafino of the Heritige Institute in Washington D. C., American companies have lost US$94billion dollars in business as a consecuence of the difficulty for foreigners to obtain visas.

The article also points out that visitors to the US have diminshed by 17% since 2001, totalling over 58 million less, having a $30billion impact on the tourism industry alone, and costing194,000 jobs.

A further US$15.6billion was lost in taxes, while San Antonio lost it's bid to host the Panamerican Games to Río de Janeiro, in part because of "the difficulty to obtain visas for visitors to the US."

Merlin said in an interview, "The dysfunciontal visa and immigration policies that intimidate and alienate legitimate travelers does not help anyone."

This made me curious, so I went to find out what kind of hoops I would be put through if I chose to visit the US as a citizen of this country. I would have to:

-Fill out and print a DS-156 form and send it to the Embassy.
-Fill out a Complimentary Visa Application Forum, DS-157, because I'm male and between the ages of 17 and 45.
-Send them a passport-sized picture of yours truely.
-Give them my passport for them to stamp.
-Pay US$100.
-Undergo an interview. Dunno what questions will be asked.
-Undergo a "biometric scan" (record my fingerprints.)
-Wait thirty days for approval.

By comparison, if I wanted to go to the UK, I just hop on the aeroplane and go. No wonder people aren't vacationing in Orlando anymore [:'(]

So, what do you Yanks think of this?

What? U.S. Companies have lost $94b?
Boy, I'm all broken up about that! How will I sleep tonight?
And as for "visitors" illegal aliens have cost the Taxpayers $92 b last year.
As for the dysfunctional visa and immigration policies yes, they are dysfunctional when we end up with 12-20 million illegal aliens in our country.
All the countries south of the border need to develop their own economies and stop depending on ours.
As for immigration I think we should take a nice long break on all immigration, say 25 years. We needed immigration 100 years ago, we don't need it now.

What the hell is wrong with you???? Since 9-11 we are safer than any other nation has ever been, Our Children are safe from terrorist attacks. Don't you want the children to be safe? OR.....are you advocating terrorism?

We should impose even more stricter immigation laws, how do we know these tourists, as you call them, are not terrorist planning to overthrow our government. Unless a businessman has real business to transact, which should be made to prove by documentation, NO ONE should be allowed into this country without a very strict, in depth background check investigation.   It is better to lose a few insignificant dollars than to have another 9-11.

Well, maybe there is some way to arrange the thing so legitimate travel is not discouraged? I mean, why do we -law abiding citizens- have to change the way we live just for some nut-cases?

popeye1250 -> RE: Economic impact of border control. (4/10/2007 12:12:30 PM)

Tuomas, because most of the "visitors" aren't comming here to see Disneyland.
Three years later they're still here!

Tuomas -> RE: Economic impact of border control. (4/10/2007 12:48:38 PM)

Well, lemme see. If 58million people constitutes 17% of the visitors. This means in that over 283million visitors have gone to the US over the last five years. Are you saying that most -i.e. 142million people- have stayed in the US?

And I did not know that wetbacks arrive by plane...[;)]

popeye1250 -> RE: Economic impact of border control. (4/10/2007 1:15:23 PM)

Nope, that's not what I'm saying.
Hey, I hear Argentina is pretty nice!

Tuomas -> RE: Economic impact of border control. (4/10/2007 1:27:43 PM)

Yeah, that's why they are all crawling over eachother to get into this country [:'(]

Well, unless they come each with a tankfull of gas, I say no dice [:D] Luckily, the government agrees with me.[:D]

I must tell you, my other post, was just mocking at your concerns. But, not you personally. In my opinion; our government could not care less about it's people, immigration, stimulating  business or whatever. Business wants the illegal aliens, simply to provide trouble free cheap labor. All the hoopla, is a screen to show a gullible populace, 'the government cares'; 'we are working on it.'

tell me how much is USD 800,000,000.00 .

You want to see what is really happening with the USofA.

This is where the action is. Be sure to research the other related sites; and read what is said; note that oil accounts for only 5% of what is happening there, as they are sure to point out. And the babbling going on here; in these forums; really mean something, coming from the great minds of the perverts of society solving the world's problems.

MzMia -> RE: Economic impact of border control. (4/10/2007 10:52:27 PM)

I would venture to say that most of the leaders solving most of the world's problems
are-perverts.[:D]

I think even with all the impending restrictions, they'll still formulate a plan that provides them with plauseble deniability after the next phony Al-Qaeda attack [8|]

ferryman777 -> RE: Economic impact of border control. (4/11/2007 8:06:25 AM)

That IS NOT the point. I am on here as well. For a Fact, they, the politicians, are the real and most perverse perverts of society. Why sound off on this; you didn't go to the web address, did you? All the stuff that is discussed here is NOT what the leaders are about. Human rights, free speech, attack Iran or not, the police bash someone etc, etc;  If you cannot concieve of the thought...that we....are not being told anything of the plans for the future of this planet... that the only interest of this regime is the money to be made; there are mega money/profit deals made....exploitations of the world's human resources, the world's natural resources of this planet...which we are not privy to...then, I pity the fools who think and believe this or any government cares about it's subjects, their rights, their lives, liberty & freedoms; making this a better place, health, the consitution;...  making things better for the masses, to ease human suffering and indignities.

Popeye rants about the illegle immigrants, when the truth is, business wants and thrives on the illegals here, the government wants the illegals,  working, being paid low; and thus keeping wages low for the general law abiding public. Laws not enforced, why....because the gov wants it that way...oh but be sure, every now and then there is a raid, front page news, and ...it's just too overwhelming for our HomeLand Security, we need more people to patrol our borders to be effective, translated...we need more money.

And...you reply because you alledgedly took offense at being called out as a pervert, and felt you had to defend yourself in some manner.

Good, so be it.

MzMia -> RE: Economic impact of border control. (4/11/2007 8:27:31 AM)

LOL, I think you need to relax and go check your blood pressure.
Have a nice day. [;)]
