"First Amendment extends to MySpace, court says"

POSTED: 12:23 p.m. EDT, April 10, 2007

"INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana (AP) -- A judge violated a juvenile's free-speech rights when he placed her on probation for posting an expletive-laden entry on MySpace criticizing a school principal, the Indiana Court of Appeals ruled."

I agree with this ruling. I do not think the school's authority should exist outside of school, it is just wrong to me.

I think that's the only ruling that could have been made.
Once you start restricting free speech it becomes a slippery slope.
Funny, all these college campuses claim to believe in free speech until they get a speaker who they disagree with and shout them down.

i wish that were the case popeye, but unfortunately our campus let anyone that applied for a permit speak in the free speech area... which in theory is a good thing until you have some Christian radical yelling at you as you walk by that you are a whore/slut that is going to hell for having anal sex with many men. That happened at my university often

All should support free speach and in this case right beat might - never atempt to restrict another right to free speach  I do not care if the are radically right or looney left or dead center with a stick up thier arse - in this country everyone has the right to say anything that they believe - noone says that you have to listen or believe them - if you do not like it just walk away - or get on your own soap-box across the street and speak your own piece

General reply -

Since the MySpace page is not on school grounds, then it is not vandalism and the student
was not calling for violence.  She was venting in a format where her friends and peers
communicate.  Placing her on probation makes no sense whatsoever.

And I hear you about the extreme Christians getting in your face, julia.
Some of them have tried to save my soul on campus too.  I have no
problem with anyone, of any faith, who lives their life by that
code and goes about their business, obeys the laws of the land,
and does not harm others.  Anyone who gets in my face or shows
up at the door pushing their belief system receives a firm but
polite "Go Away!"

And this one jerk would make a circuit on college campuses where he would stand
out in the open, cursing and condeming everyone who did not agree with his
own myopic, bigoted version of Christianity.  He reduced some of the girls to
tears and scared many of the students.

He failed to realize that hatred is neither a family nor a Christian value.

Yeah, if I'm going to hell then what should he care?
Damn, I wish I could make my head turn around 360 degrees and spit pea soup at those idiots!
Failing that there's always a wrist rocket sling shot and ball bearings.

I was not that offended about these things being said to me, but there were many girls that went to college that were only 18, some of them very naive, and to be honest I do not think that going to class means one should be subjected to being called names like this under the guise of "free speech"...to me it felt like assault.. the perv probably got a hard on yelling crap like this at us

Amen... Like I said, it can border on a feeling of harassment, abuse, and assault when subjected to things like this.

luckydog1 -> RE: "First Amendment extends to MySpace, court says" (4/11/2007 9:53:03 PM)

We had a guy like that would come to my University once a semester back in the late 80s.  He carried a huge cross around with him, and screamed about us Satan worshipers and thier whores.  My crowd looked forward to his visits, and would follow him around getting him all riled up/pissed off, then send him towards some Bussiness Students.  But surley no one here wants to put him in a "Free Speech Zone", do they?

I find it amusing, really.

I generally know more about their religion than they do.

Go figure.

i find it amusing as well.......... and when people have tried to convert me i always let them know that i worship Anton Levay.

Or i just agree...... or i tell them that hell sounds like fun........ or w/e

But i really like Domiguy's approach and will have to use it some day.  I think the next radical religious nut i run into i am going to have to promptly cross myself and say "Jesus please protect me from your followers"

hehehehehe

Vendaval -> RE: "First Amendment extends to MySpace, court says" (4/12/2007 2:02:04 AM)

Yes, after 12 years of forced parochial schooling I know more
than any of them about Christian theology.  One guy was a math major
and had a very rational approach to life, aside from trying
to save my soul (and wanting in my pants very badly).

You should have seen the look on his face when I suggested
that he seek out the local synagogue to learn more about
the roots of the Old Testment and the Jewish faith.
