popeye1250 -> Anyone here been to Sweeden and Denmark? (4/11/2007 11:18:46 AM)

I'm planning a trip to Sweeden, Denmark and Ireland next year (July 2008) and I've been to Ireland three times so far and have dual American/ Irish Citizenship.
I've never been to Sweeden or Denmark though.
Has anyone in here been to those two countries and if so what usefull info do you have?

Wow, no-one here has been to Sweeden or Denmark?
I'll feel like a pioneer!

I went to Sweden and Denmark.   How long are you staying in each?

Do not  drink aquavit with the Dansk, they will drop you like last nights newspaper (and be very good about please and thank you, they are scandinavian nazis and easily offended)

If I had limited time in sweden I would remember the word Birka (the old village where odin is buried) and Gokstad and see the Viking ship.

I have never been, but I am sure some of our comrades from the UK have been.
Sounds like a wonderful trip!

I went to Denmark years ago to the town my ancestors (the Viking side) are from.

There are two last names in the cemetary.  Coincidentally, these are the last names of my grandparents.

I am a true product of thousands of years of genetic inbreeding.

Love the Danish.  Adored the hell out of fishing for Sand Dabs on Jutland.  Museums were cool

Went to Sweden.  They seemed nice.

I have a feeling that my interests at the age of 11 probably would not really have much relevance to your vacation.

Enjoy!

Well I figure I'll be in Sweeden for a week and two days in Denmark then off to Ireland for about a week to 10 days.
Yes I'd like to see Viking museums etc. And of course the countryside and meet the people.

Just curious... out of all the countries in Europe, why Sweden and Denmark?

Not that those countries don't have much to offer, and I'm sure they are beautiful, but compared to their more southern counterparts they definately lag behind in tourist attractions, museums, art, archaeology, music, architecture, cuisine, etc.

Where in Norway?

My last name is Melby, but it should be Knuteson
and I have relatives in Honefoss, Oslo and Trondheim

Oh, Norway over Denmark and Sweden any day..........

Hvordan har du det?

Jei har de bra!!!!

No, but I'd love to visit. They sound like interesting countries to see and experience (to me).

Well first, I've never been there.
Second I've been to all the southern counterparts twice when I was in the Navy.
Also as a Sailor for most of my adult life I've always respected Scandinavians as great Sailors.
And my ancesters comming from the northern part of Ireland they were probably injected with Viking blood way back when.
Dublin, Ireland was founded by the Vikings I found out.

Been to ireland a few times, but sadly neither of the other places you are going.  i've an old school friend that just moved over to Sweden - giving me a place to stay when ever i happen into the area.......

Of course if you like - i could ask her for any advice.  Might be limited as she just moved and it was winter....

thats all i have for you.

Oh wait, i could ask my Dad about those places.  He's been pretty much everywhere.  Just say the word and i'll gather up info for you.

Popeye, If I were to go I would try to check out some of the Sami culture, I have met a few here in Alaska.

stevepops -> RE: Anyone here been to Sweeden and Denmark? (4/11/2007 10:37:27 PM)

I am a Dane, when are you going? If you want to see viking sites you have to stay more than two days. the major vikinge museum is in Lejre close to Roskilde - 30 min train from Copenhagen. One of the larger old sites is Fyrkat not far from Hobro in Jylland. Also you might want to check out the Vikinge Festival at Moesgaard by Aarhus - a fun place to be.
And of course there are all the nice topless ... and bottomless girls sunbating in the cityparks or at the beaches ...

keep in touch

I've been to both countries quite a few times, though I haven't been to Sweden recently. Copenagen is a better night out than Stockholm. The Swedes are a little uptight when it comes to having a good time, well their establishment is. You used to get gangs of Swedes catching the ferry to Copenhagen to have a night out at weekends because alcohol in Sweden is so expensive and restricted. Protestant heritage I guess. Both peoples are cool fish outside the nightlife areas but both countries are beautiful in their own way and for different reasons.

DLsister, where in Ireland did you go?
As they say there "The West is the best."
Stevepops, yes, I'd like to see those Viking villages and Museums too! I like stuff like that. I may adjust my schedule accordingly.
Meat, I was reading some tourist stuff last night about Sweden and they said the same thing that you did.
There was an article about a Cruise Liner Company whose Board of Directors went on one of their ships for a "Booze Cruise" and they tore up the place, beat up a bar tender, sexually harrassed a cocktail waitress, started a fire by putting a fish in a toaster and a bunch of other things.
Those crazy Sweedes!
Also I was looking at hotels in Stockholm and Malmo which is close to Copenhagen and they look pretty nice but it seems that only about half of them have restaurants in them.
And a lot of them can be had for $90-$110 per night which is pretty reasonable for a big city.
They evidently built a 22 mile long bridge from Malmo to Copenhagen recently too that they charge $33 one way for to cross.
I may cut my time in Stockholm to 3 days.

Travel Advice

1) Acquire a quality, well fitting chastity device and lock it on at touchdown. This will hopefully prevent your gonads from exploding at the sight of Danish ladies, and/or preventing you wearing them out should you get lucky otherwise.

2) Do not get into a drinking competition with Danes. Irish ancestry or not, you are more likely to die of alcohol poisoning than to win such a contest.

3) Make a stopover at Birmingham Airport to pick me up on the way to Scandinavia as I'd love to go and see all the Viking heritage, but am a bit broke at the moment!

What kind of price tag is on a trip like this? Sounds pricey unless you have relatives you are staying with.
