Dear Veryleggyredhead, Ladies and Gentlemen; It is a fact, that over time people do get desensitized to pain and it take more to achieve the same response and the endorphin rush/high. It is called "Leather Butt" for those who have their bottoms subjected to heavy impact over time. Even their buttocks flattens. My dear friend and neurosurgeon "Dr. Leather" who practices in Ohio, has medically stated that the nerves in the area and under the skin are damaged and then loose all sensitivities whatsoever. Nerves do not regenerate. The nerve bundles are different in different areas of the anatomy. Fed by blood, when crushed or abused they just wither and die--dry out like a hose is his analogy. It takes less than 10 minutes, according to Dr. Leather; for blood vessels in a healthy young adult; being clamped, bound and or robbed of blood circulation to die. This is a concern of his as far as bondage goes. Impact play, that is heavy should be an occasional practice according to the doctor. He isn't saying 'No.." He is just suggesting moderation. Another thing Dr. Leather advises; is that sites for bondage, clamping and impact are changed often. Having the body under stress as far as blood vessels, nerves and skin--to change sites allows areas stressed to recover. This supports the "Old School" method of using the entire body and changing the tools and techniques. Hot and Cold, as far as whip work goes Heavy, Medium and Light, mixed up and variety given. For those who are low as far as tolerating pain, it might be due to the area where nerves sit. Not all have nerve endings that sit extremely close to skin which amplifies pain sensation. Some sit a little deeper. How the body as far as relaxation, stressed, in prior pain and or discomfort due to illness, injuries and or changes--has a direct effect on how the body registers and channels pain. Chemical mix or cocktails within our own body, how our mind and emotions mix in their own cocktail of chemicals will also effect how pain is felt and handled. Body position has an effect on how pain is registered and handled. Yet, few understand how the body can take pain and let it dispurse. I always add how important a slave's body position is when it comes to impact play. Hopefully, my friend Dr. Leather will complete and publish his work on creating a BDSM Medical Manual. He does want to have a safer dungeon play in the Gay Leather circles and I've asked him to include women into this manual. He has agreed and is happy to share his professional advice along with his Leather experiences. Respectfully submitted for consideration, Lady Hugs
