"Abstinence students still having sex"

Study tracked 2,057 young people in government-funded programs
Associated Press

"WASHINGTON - Students who participated in sexual abstinence programs were just as likely to have sex a few years later as those who did not, according to a long-awaited study mandated by Congress.

Also, those who attended one of the four abstinence classes reviewed reported having similar numbers of sexual partners as those who did not attend the classes, and they first had sex at about the same age as their control group counterparts — 14.9 years, according to Mathematica Policy Research Inc.

The federal government now spends about $176 million annually on abstinence-until-marriage education. Critics have repeatedly said they don’t believe the programs are working, and the study will give them reinforcement."

One didn't need to run a programme to know that abstinence classes wouldn't work. The people who thought it would have their heads in the sand. What appears to work best for youngsters is full and frank sex education, teaching how best to deal with the emotions, instincts and hormones teenagers are going to be awash with.

Looking at the stats, all the English speaking countries have higher teenage pregnancy rates than any other developed countries. I'm not sure why that is but I'm thinking when it comes to sex, English speaking countries are more fucked up and are more hypocritical when it comes to morals than other cultures.

No Surprise....abstaining from an animal instinct is not going to work, no matter what the reason. It's not a moral issue, it's trying to work against horemones. If you're hungry, you eat....if you're horny.....well........duh....lol.

This is Bush Co. remember? They don't want us to do anything fun. Have sex. Marry our SO if said SO is the same sex as us.  Do research that might save millions upon billions of lives. Anyways back tot he subject at hand of course the courses did nothing, the question is what precentage got pregnant or caught somethign because they were UNAWARE. Yeah i know it seems pretty stupid to be like that in this day and age but between abstinance classes and parents who homeschool their kids and theach that as well anythign is possible.

Personally I loved my sex ed class because it was clear and to the point and we were allowed to ask questions about anything that wasn't adressed in the material. i say teach them the facts and then drop a smal brown paper bag with comdoms, lube sample and dental dams, that or send them to planned parenthood. Knowledge is Power AND Safety.

Another thing that is going on is that students in junior high and high school abstain from genital to genital contact and remain virgins by indulging in oral sex only.  In this way they still have fun, but no risk of pregnancy and to them they aren't losing their virginity (in the technical sense).  I've had teachers tell me that oral sex among the student population is a huge thing.

My same thoughts too, Scooter.

And if you think of our basic biology and sexual development,
abstinence only makes even less sense.  Women starts menustration
somewhere between ages 9 - 16.  Men are getting erections in
this same age range and both are going through all the awkward
body changes.  Combine raging hormones + natural curiosity
+ a culture where sex sells everything from soap to cars to
to beer to electronics = sexual experimentation.
