Friends, let me regale you with a tale. I decided to get off my lazy butt and try to harvest the HD from my mom's old PC.

SO being the good computer tech that I am, I decide to do the job right, go get a static strap and an anti static bag for other parts. The purpose of these items is to prevent the delicate electronics from being destroyed by static electricity.

Just scrapping your feet across a rug can build up a large enough charge to destroy memory chips, hard drives, and video cards among other things.

Well, I swing over to my local Radio Shack, figuring that if anyone would have these items and be open on a Saturday, it would be good ol' Junk Shack.

I found the wrist strap $4.95 but they didn't carry anti-static bags anyway as I am checking out the guy behind the counter asks me, "what's that for?" I get the words computer out and he immediately interjects, "Are you a computer tech or something...I'm a computer tech, I build computer's myself" .

Well I explain to him that what the strap is for, and how it prevents damage to equipment. "Man, I wish someone had told me that, I've got 6 $200 Video cards at home that wont work"
And you call yourself a computer tech??????

That would explain why your busting your ass at Radio Shack on a Saturday. SO no one told you a $5 piece of equipment would have saved your ass $1200 dollars in computer equipment....Makes Sense to me!

Yep,
Whole bunch of folks who have "swiss cheese knowledge" out there...looks solid until you get closer...I come across them often when I'm doing tech or pentest/security work.   Amazing how we've been (as a culture) set up to believe we know everything without doing much of anything to learn something..   Texas Hold'em comes to mind.....everybody is a poker player once they know the pecking order of hands, it seems.   (Thanks for the money though folks!)

BTW, cut that resistor off the end by the alligator clip and now you have a nice conductive band to wrap around interesting bits for electroplay ;)

Yeah...there are Physics professors I wouldn't trust with a screwdriver. But, damn, are they good at the math! Be thankful he was such a good Radio Hut employee....or at least good entertainment!

Heh, it works just as well to ground yourself before working on the computer, instead of worrying about getting an anti-static strap... As far as anti-static bags go, I find that when you save all the anti-static bags everything comes in, you never need to get any new ones.
