"Panel finds injured vets tripped up by red tape"

POSTED: 12:41 p.m. EDT, April 14, 2007

" WASHINGTON (AP) -- Injured soldiers returning home for medical treatment face an unacceptable maze of paperwork and bureaucracy, leaders of a presidential commission on veterans' health care said Saturday.

At their first public hearing, members pledged to work quickly to find solutions rather than assign blame.

"This is not going to be a witch hunt," said former GOP Sen. Bob Dole of Kansas, one of the heads of the Commission on Care for America's Returning Wounded Warriors.

Dole noted that at least nine congressional committees are investigating veterans' health care problems after the disclosures in February of squalid conditions and poor outpatient treatment at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington.

Donna Shalala, health and human services secretary under President Clinton, said the commission planned a report by late July that would be pragmatic and "solution-driven." "

I think it is wonderful that Bob Dole (who is always waving "the bloddy shirt" and pimping his war time service and injury) is going to investigate this.  My only question is, if he is such a big protector of injured vets, why did he not know of this until the newspapers told him.  One would think that he would have had his finger on the pulse of the VA in a continious effort to protect the welfare of those vets he keeps pimping.

Maybe the administration did not think it was yet time to spin out PimpedWoundedVets V1.0 in order to convince people to go be cannon fodder in Iraq.

There is a timing for everything, and I have come to the conclusion that this administration will not show anything until their spin doctors have a chance to doctor the information so the administration doesn't look like the Three Stooges.

There are definately health care issues and problems in the Veterans Administration. Last January 4th when I had a severe nasal, throat and bronchial infection, the VA Clinic here told me that the earliest they could see me was on February 28th. I told the lady on the phone that by that time I would either be dead or cured and she said that she was sorry, but since this wasnt life threatening that I would have to simply wait. Seeing as I was unemployed at the time, I had to go borrow the money from family just so I could get treatment from a regular facility. My doctor at the time told me that I was about 4 days away from having to be admitted to a hospital because the infection was so severe. So yes, the VA medical system is definately fouled up. Ask any vet who has ever needed medical treatment and 9 out of 10 times they will tell you that it is easier just to go to a regular clinic or hospital than it is to go to a VA Clinic.

I do know people who work in the medical field and hold employment with a couple of VA Medical facilities and they are very good, very hard working people who put in very long work days. So it is not them who is to blame. It is simply the lack of funding and the overwhelming paperwork that is involved that is to blame for Veterans not being able to get timely treatment.

I do not know where you live so I cannot speak to the care level of that particular VA.  I know many vets who have told me horror stories about their experience with the VA.  In my case the VA is my primary health care provider.   I have used the facility at Long Beach California and the facility in Loma Linda California.  So far so good.  I recognize that they have their agenda and that it may not be exactly aligned with mine.  Consequently I tend to be proactive in my health care needs.  Both of the facilities I have mentioned have a walk in emergency room.  I have availed myself of both of them and was successful.  Perhaps I have just been lucky.
That being said I would never put my health in their care blindly.  On more than one occasion I have returned their medication to them with medical proof  of its lack of efficacy.  To their credit they accepted my position and followed my suggestions baised on my research.  Was I being patted on the head...I am absolutely sure I was.  They are shills for the phamaceutical companies and the AMA but they recognize that I am a paying customer and they will sell me what I want...they just wont make as much money.

Saint, I have a good friend who has been struggling with the VA
bureaucracy for years.  It caused him to have a nervous breakdown.
No doubt that some facilities and staff are better than others at
different locations.  But stories like yours are far too common.

There is a vast difference between perception by rational individuals and self-perception.

Please clarify the audience viewing them so I can intelligently answer your question.
