"Traveler taxes awarded to small airports"

By BOB PORTERFIELD, Associated Press Writer
20 minutes ago

" SAN FRANCISCO - The federal government has taken billions of dollars from the taxes and fees paid by airline passengers every time they fly and awarded it to small airports used mainly by private pilots and globe-trotting corporate executives.

Some of these "general aviation" facilities used the federal dollars for enhancements such as longer runways and passenger terminals aimed at luring traffic, an Associated Press review has found. And the money comes with little oversight, and at the expense of an increasingly beleaguered air transportation system.

"They're making out like bandits," said Bob Poole, director of transportation studies at Southern California's Reason Foundation and author of several studies on air transportation costs. "It's not only that airline passengers are paying more than their fair share, but they're being overtaxed to give private jets a free ride." "

Maybe that's why there's no bathrooms past security at the Santa Barbara Airport!

So you have flown through Santa Barbara too?
Don't even get me started on some of their

problems with handling passengers!

In the rush to get the bad rich people, please do not forget that tens of millions of Americans do depend on these smaller airports for crtical needs, ie medical evacuation.  A lot of that money has been spent upgrading airports in Rural Alaska.

Haha!  Yep, I actually live near the airport in Isla Vista, so the benefits definitely outweigh the lack of modern facilities.  Where else can I leave for the airport 30 minutes before my flight and still make it onboard?    But yah, they're building a modern terminal next year with airport fees, so hopefully things will improve.

How many rural airports are there in Alaska, ld?
How are these airports funded?
Please supply some additional information.

luckydog1:
Why is it that when the rich suck off of the not rich that's ok....but...should the not rich seek to benifit from the rich that is socialism?
Why is it  the taxpayers job to subsidize private enterprise ie: rural alaskan airports?
Just curious as to just how many medical evacuations happened in rural alaskan airports last year?  Should you choose by your own volition to live in a remote area why is it the taxpayers job to subsidize you? You have alwayse struck me as one of those "rugged individualist" who eschewed socialism in all its pernicious forms....or is only socialism for others, and not yourself, that you are against?
