A few fears, but not all of them. =)

I have severe anxiety. Four years ago, just leaving the house was facing a major fear sometimes. But, hey.. it's a process, good days and bad days, yadda yadda. =)

Props for the fear facing
S

Yeah, I think I have a minor fear of people sometimes. Sometimes just going out into a crowd can seem a little challenging. It has lessened over the years.

Yeah, me too.
Isn't it almost un-bearable being around dumb people?
"I see dumb people, they're everywhere!"

I drove with my instructor today, who is this wonderful older guy that has been instructing people like me for 40 years. I sure know how to pick em, because he was perfect for me! He was patient and experienced.

I drove for an hour and a half... he was only supposed to take me out for an hour, but he kept me driving longer. I drove through lights, traffic, made right hand turns at lights, left hand turns at lights.. used controlled turns, drove down country roads with 4 way stops... basically he had me to almost everything but a U turn and freeways... I did lane changes too.

I had no panic today... NONE. Everytime he saw me tense up he started talking to me about "stuff" to keep me from going into panic mode. Turns out he has taught many phobics to drive. It must be karma that I found the perfect teacher.

He said that we might only drive in a parking lot if I had a lot of trouble driving with traffic, and lord knows I was scared, but I just kept thinking, "he has to direct me to drive to the parking lot sooner or later"... it was much later, like near the end of the lesson, and only then to show me how to drive in reverse....he basically tricked me[:D].

I am going to update this thread with news of my overcoming this at my old age, because there are several people posting here that have the same phobia... and if I can do it, truly anyone can... if I give someone hope then it was worth exposing this phobia... I used to be ashamed of it.

Congratulations Julia on taking this HUGE step, your instructor does indeed sound like an excellent choice for you  [:)]

Yes he was, and I wanted to add something. It is because of Daddy I found my courage, and I wanted to say how grateful I am that he would not let up on this.

Having faced a major fear today, and feeling pretty damn good about it... have any of you faced your fears, and if so, how did that feel when you were through? I still have just a little further to go to get over this one, but I am starting to feel truly free just contemplating it no longer holding me back. Who knows what horizons lie ahead for me to traverse on my own...

Julia you confound me.  You have this issue but you continually put others down.  i will never get how you can be so judgemental but have issues you are trying to deal with.  Why not try compassion? i will never get your hateful speech and then where you say you are at today.

minnetar,

You can follow me around and insult me as much as you like. I am not going to respond to you anymore.

Be Well and Good Luck to You in Whatever it is that You are Searching for

Peace Out

Am I somehow confused? Or did you actually hunt down this thread by Julia regarding her accomplishment just to be nasty to her? Because this is seriously how it appears.

Julia ---

Congrats on facing down your fear! I'm not sure I have a driving phobia exactly, but I hated driver's ed and never bothered to get a license. Have been thinking lately, htough, that I need to bite the bullet and learn. Someone (Richard neutra?) once said that not driving in America was like reading a book in translation.

My most vivid experience of confronting fear was bungee-jumping in New Zealand. I stood at the end of the platform, looked down, and thought "Our species doesn't fly." After several false starts, I finally jumped, and the feeling ofhaving broken through the fear was incredible. Yet I've never felt the urge to do it again. Maybe someday.

Cheers,

DC

juliaoceania -> RE: Fears (4/25/2007 9:03:28 PM)

Every day off I have made a commitment to drive, if only for a little ways

popeye1250 -> RE: Fears (4/25/2007 9:32:10 PM)

Julia, what kind of car will you be driving?
Your "Carbon Footprint" is going to be a lot bigger!

A Saturn... so it will probably not be as big as yours

And not "will be", I have been driving it[:)]

popeye1250 -> RE: Fears (4/25/2007 9:43:28 PM)

I don't know, my "carbon footprint" is 9880 and that's with driving a new Mercury Grand Marquis with an 8 cylinder engine.
But, I only drive about 8,000 miles per year.

juliaoceania -> RE: Fears (4/25/2007 9:45:52 PM)

I have three people in my house, and I have a carbonfoot print of 19k, three ways, that is a little over 6k footprint
