This thought wandered into My head this morning, and it made Me a little curious.

Often in posts or replies, I notice that the message was edited.  Some, like Myself, will add the reason for the edit, such as spelling errors (which I often have) or to comment on posts that were coming in at the same time.  This morning, I noticed one that was edited and all that was left was "oooppss", with no actual content of the message left.  Some messages are edited and nothing is said to why it was done (better left to the editor, for their own reasons.

This got Me thinking a bit.  Over the past weekend, I was a little down over something that was through real life, and I know it was showing in My posts because I was thinking of it (and it's relevance) when I wrote them.  While this isn't always My personality, it isn't My habit of going back to change them just because now I am in a better mood.  I like to leave My posts as original, for whatever I'm feeling, because it shows the different (some worse than others) sides of Me.

The question I have is, what is your take on this?  Do you leave your posts as written, or do you, at times, edit them for emotion?  Whether that be something in your world that is making you sad (maybe even just a rainy day) or something that was said here that might have angered you, or made you feel compassion for another?  (I don't want to classify emotions as good or bad, but some have a more positive feeling to them than others.).  I'll even go so far as, have you ever had a post influenced by PMS?  Any random thoughts on this?

When I post, I generally try to keep my 'emotions' out of it and use my rational brain.  So far (I only have a handful of posts to go by) this has been relatively easy for me.  Now, I imagine sometime in the future I may reply to a post while influenced through my emotions (bad day, PMS, whatever) and that emotion may convey through my words.  If that does occur, I am not the kind of person to later go back and edit my post after my mood has changed.  I may however post another message to the topic at hand explaining that my mood had colored my opinion and recant what I had said, or soften it somewhat.  I just do not think changing the post would do the reader's any good.

An example of what I mean:

Suppose I had a really bad day and wrote something inflammatory regarding another poster.  Okay, this is stupid and would likely have many posters 'flaming' me or defending the poster I 'flamed'.  If a few hours pass, and I modify the statement, future readers are going to be misguided.  They will think that all the other posters were jumping on me without merit because of the rewording.  I think that is akin to lying, which, I do my best to avoid.  Now, if those same few hours pass, and I regret my choice of words, I would likely apologize and explain my inappropriate behavior.  This way, future readers understand the entire context of the thread.

I do regularly edit for typos or for clarity, but, not for emotion.  Hope that helps.

I have only ever edited my posts when I have made an obvious spelling mistake or something doesnt make any sense when Ive read it back !!.  There has been times when I have thought god I cant believe I wrote that and thought about going back and changing it but I never have, I figure if I felt it atthe time then its relevent and we all have bad days.

I think I said oops in an edited post the other day! Sometimes I press the button twice and in this case my post came up twice on the boards. My reaction was 'darn you silly moo' and then quickly got rid of it.

Normally I don't edit a post unless its a spelling mistake

edited for spelling mistake!

just an FYI: this system won't allow a double post... in fact it will prevent you from making multiple postings in a short period of time

back on topic: I've edited many posts. Often it is because I find minor spelling errors or a better way to word something.

I may have deleted a post & put something like oops, eh or never mind when I figured "why the hell am I even bothering to reply".

I edit for a variety of reasons. I will edit because I see one s missing, or for a missing comma that would make the expression clearer or easier to read. I will edit to reword what I have said to make it more articulate. I will edit to reword what I have said if it can be interpretted in an unintended way. And I will edit if my post was made out of frustration and is not consistent with the standard of conduct I hold for myself.

Cheers,

Sea

I usually edit for spelling errors when I do.  I will sometimes, however, edit a post to add something if I had just posted it and thought of something pertinent that is not too terribly long.  When I do this I will usually add "edited to add "___".  I do not go back and edit for emotion.  If I come back to a post after when I am in a different mood and have a different perspective, I will just add another post explaining something to the effect of "I was sad, mad, etc when I posted this and now that I feel better I have a slightly different perspective...blah blah".  I think showing both can sometimes benefit the OP or those reading it to see that particular situations can be altered depending on one's mood.

Once in a while I respond to the OP in haste. Once I post I re-read the OP and think oh my goodness that's not what I read the first time at all. 90% of the time it's for spelling. I bop in, read the op, respond and hit the dang Ok button before I remember to spell check.
I always re-read the OP and my post to be sure I don't think I sound coo coo to myself and notice huge errors.
Lately I've been leaving more of the minor ones in just because I don't want to look like I constantly edit my posts.
I know for some reason after a window of about 24hrs there's no edit button on my posts left to be able to go back and edit so I'm not sure how you can go back much later and still accomplish that.

I am a habitual editor.  I have never edited for emotion.  Rather, I am a bit of a perfectionist and often think of a better word to use, or decide to add a little extra something to improve the way my post sounds or to clarify it a bit.  Sometimes I'll catch a spelling/grammatical error or typo, so if I'm not too late, I edit.   Edit is my friend.

I use the edit feature quite a bit, because that's how I write - fire something off, then go back and rework it for clarity, brevity, etc.

I edit my posts because I am a really terrible typist, mostly, and they always need correction after a "first draft", especially if they are longer posts.

That and-or I read something after I wrote it, and the way its worded it, makes it seem to not make great sense - then I may re-phrase it or something, to be more clear or descriptive.

I edit for all sorts of reasons, depending on how precise I'm trying to be on any given day...  My reasons include: emotions, previously misunderstood what I was responding to, what I wrote made sense to me but probably not to the rest of the world, etc...  LOL
What can I say?!    M

I'm trying to figure this one out.

Does editing a post somehow translate into looking bad?

(for the curious minded, I guess I either forgot to click the "s" key or when I touched it it didn't respond... at any rate, I misspelled the word translate. BTW, if this is the point of this post <soothing the curious minded>, you folks will just have to deal with being curious because I don't plan to explain ever little typo or edit every time I elect to use the feature, thank you )

I edit all the time, primarily because I cannot figure out how to operate the spell check function here on cm.

I edit often, however, it is only to correct spelling errors, typos (My fingers are very dyslexic at that keyboard), etc.  Since there was a problem at one time regarding people making inappropriate statements and then becoming embarrassed about their own behavior, then trying to go back and take it out and also convince others to remove supporting statements, I think they have reworked the edit system so that one only has a limited amount of time to edit.  If I was upset and it showed in a post, and I felt better several hours later, I don't think I have the option of editing at that point.  It is too late.
However, I try to police Myself regarding a response that might be less than calm and clear-headed.  And when I don't, I usually recognize it, throw it out there anyway,  and include the statement that I am cranky!   Not on edit,
but right in the original post!
HOWEVER....I will never forget the day, so many moons (years?) ago, when I read a response from another poster that was quite to the point but polite and then I saw at the bottom "*edited to be nicer".  That gave Me quite a chuckle.

I will edit for spelling, but won't change content.

I edit threads for a variety of reasons, I don't think I have ever explained why I edit
on the thread.  I am too busy editing, but it is nice when people explain why they
edit.

I edit do to spelling or "nobody is going to be able to read this" reasons. I just forget to put in the reason why I'm editing, and then I don't want to edit again to add the reason.
