mixielicous -> low blood sugar (4/18/2007 9:59:05 AM)

i saw this in the "snapping" thread, about a girl who tried to blame it on her low blood sugar. as someone who does suffer blood sugar drops, i find that in fact, this does severly affect my attitude and sometimes it is hard for me to remember this [who thought it would be hard to remember to eat???]

but if you girls/guys also suffer that, what are ways you have worked around it and what are good foods for somewhat speedy release of sugar for you? i assume juice and fruit but i always just go for whatever i reach first! ... prolly should put this in health but it wont get attention over there so i am incorporating coping techniques within your dynamic as part of my OP so the focus isnt on the low blood sugar itself.

Prevention is always best of course.  I always get in trouble when I let myself go off-schedule or think I can deal with it.

I also keep snacks in the car so I can always grab something.

It's easy for that to happen in prolonged sceneing with anyone, not only those prone to having an everyday problem and something to always look out for along with dehydration. Incorporating some food into the play or taking a "break" and feeding the sub a little is what we usually do. finger foods, small things. grapes are great, sugar and hydration.

Good info about hypoglycemia. But I've known women with gestational diabetis to keep whole wheat crackers and a bag of apples at their desks. No worry about keeping things cold.

Otherwise; power bars, juice packs, fruit, cheese and crackers. You want things that can be left in a bowl nearby so you don't have to take time to go get something when you feel the symptoms hit.

great site, thanks!

makes me wonder how i came to suffer it though, since i do not seem to fit the criteria. will def be bringing this up at the docs!

CassandraAlexis -> RE: low blood sugar (4/18/2007 12:38:09 PM)

Mixie, dont let that sway you. There are also a group of us out there that roller coaster, go from extremely high to extremely low blood sugars in a short period of time, especially around carbohydrates like bread and pasta, not so much the veggie and fruit carbs. Also sometimes high blood sugar can have similar characteristics/symptoms as low blood sugar. If you have any of the symptoms can't hurt to have the doc check it. Remember that their "common carriers" are just that, the common text book people, there are always people that dont fit the textbook stereotype that are effected.

A good way to prevent swings in blood sugar is to eat the South Beach way.  If you don't need to lose weight then you can go directly to phase three.

The basics are:
Avoid all foods with added sugars, white flours, white potatoes, and trans fats; limit saturated fats and starchy veggies.
Eat a minimum of 4.5 cups of veggies per day, at least 3oz of protein at every meal, 1-3 servings of whole grains per day, 1-3 servings of fruit per day, approx. 3 tsps of "good fats" like olive oil, avacado, nut oils per day; 2 servings of low fat dairy per day.
Eat 3 meals and 2-3 snacks per day.

Sugar and white flours cause a spike in blood sugar which then results in insulin release and a drop in blood sugar, causing low blood sugar, hunger and cravings.

The low glycemic foods like protein, whole grains and dense veggies cause slower digestion which prevents the swings in blood sugar. Eating those foods frequently also helps prevent the swings in blood sugar.

Side note--South Beach is not a low carb plan.

calicowgirl -> RE: low blood sugar (4/18/2007 3:41:44 PM)

I suffer from hypoglycemia as well... mine is from some malfunction in the pancreas that triggers it to release too much insulin as a result of sugar intake. I am supposed to follow a diabetic diet... limit sugar, small meals real often etc.

What I have found that works for me is to make sure my snacks and meals are high in fiber and protein. If I get enough protein, I can eat pretty much whatever I want. Like others, I try to keep snacks handy, in the car and glucose tablets in my purse.

I have found that I have a much harder time keeping things level when the seasons change from winter into summer(here in the So Cal desert we only have 2 seasons). I am sure it is because I am a lot more active. Also staying hydrated plays a big role as does stress and being ill.

I have a series of symptoms that "usually" happen... ie, I get the shakes that feel like they are from the inside out, sweat, feel nauseas, get real pale, almost gray... if my ears start ringing and I get tunnel vision it is usually too late and I will faint so if for some reason I get to that point, I sit down wherever I happen to be and ask for help because I've fallen before and injured a window sill(poor thing). [8|] On the other hand, every once in a while I have a freak episode that just happens out of nowhere... this has happened before when I've hurt myself. Just something about stubbing and breaking a toe that sucks all the glucose from my bloodstream.

I usually just become irritated, very confused, can't seem to put words together, small motor skills such as writing etc tend to go away. And when it is all said and done and my sugar is back up, I am wiped out for several hours.

I have yet to have any trouble when playing/sceneing at all so I guess just making sure I am fed and hydrated works fine for me.

Good luck to you,
cali

I have insulin resistance and I experience the symptoms of low blood sugar because my body is trying to work on less blood sugar than it was working on before and I talked to my doctor, today in fact, she told me to try to stay away from carbs because they are quick sugars and can bring your sugar level up quick and drop quick. I do experience irriatiblity when I notice the symptoms mostly because I don't feel well.

Fnordstrum -> RE: low blood sugar (4/18/2007 4:23:33 PM)

Heh, I used to be hypoglycemic, now I'm diabetic, fun with taking insulin and all.. in any case, whenever I get low I just eat a lot of carbohydrates, preferably ones that are mostly sugar such as in Ice Cream or some kind of candy or juice... Of course if you don't want to get low again quickly you're supposed to have a little candy or whatever to raise your sugar, and then also eat like some bread or something that will make your sugar stay high longer... In any case I'm not terribly worried about preventing low sugar because I can always eat, however before doing something where I definitely wouldn't be able eat, I'd probably make sure to eat something, or eat a little extra, so as to not get low.

Fnord.

Rayne58 -> RE: low blood sugar (4/18/2007 6:04:50 PM)

Master is diabetic and his sugars are difficult to control, but better since His insulin was changed to a long acting one with a short acting one for when His sugars are too high.

We keep jellybeans handy at all times - in the lounge, bedroom, car and my bag so I have them on me whenever we go out. Small packets of juice or small bottles of soda are good for a quick fix especially if He's very low and has trouble chewing. I also carry a couple of muesli bars as well - they're portable, have some sugars and carbs so the sugar stays up longer.

We test His blood sugar several times a day and proceed according to the readings. High=2 units of quick acting insulin, low=eat something. He tends to get shaky and confused when He's low, but other times there are no symptoms and He could be as low as 1.4mmol/l like He was the other day!

On rare occasions He will get very grumpy with me when He's having a hypo....He's told me to "F&*% off" a few times. He did warn me about that ahead of time so I didn't get upset. I just get on with feeding Him sugar and it does take a while for Him to come back after one of these "turns".....He's cold and feels very tired after.

I also suffer from blood sugar drops. I can totally relate to forgeting to eat, sometimes I'm jsut so busy I forget. I keep those sugar tab things handy I think they are called gluclose tabs

hisannabelle -> RE: low blood sugar (4/18/2007 6:18:29 PM)

greetings mixie,

low blood sugar generally makes me lightheaded, sometimes slurs/slows my speech, causes dizziness, and makes it difficult for me to complete tasks. occasionally it makes me snappish, but never to the point where i've been unable to control that part of it. for prevention, i try to eat every 2-4 hours. when my sugar drops, i usually try to eat a full meal because otherwise it'll just drop again an hour later, even worse, usually. i also try to incorporate lots of fruit, veggies, and whole grains into my diet, and limit my intake of sugary, processed juices and other drinks (which is sometimes hard, 'cause i'm a soda addict).

good luck :)

annabelle.

Depending on what kind of insulin resistance, you could try asking your doctor for a systemic presynaptic alpha-2 antagonist. As a woman, you should experience less side-effects than men, and your insulin requirements would most likely drop by up to 30%, with an increased baseline blood sugar. I've seen some people become unable to tolerate sugar when using these meds (that is, getting nauseated, and even smelling the sugar as sickly sweet when moving past the candy section of a store).

Outside the US, reboxetine (Edronax) would be the preferred choice. Don't know what the US has, though, except for atomoxetine, which has been connected to liver problems, but is manufactured domestically.

zindyslave -> RE: low blood sugar (4/19/2007 6:36:01 AM)

When I feel a drop in blood sugar I usually grab something like veggies to keep my blood sugar higher for a longer period of time. I know that won't nessarily work for diabetics but it could for people who get blood sugar drops without being diabetic. As for what you said, Aswad, I don't sick from sugar or anything which I am happy about that, but all my medicine does it slow down my insulin production.

Devilslilsister -> RE: low blood sugar (4/19/2007 6:47:38 AM)

Holy crap thanks for the thread Mixi.  Last halloween i drank a soda and went running around the neighborhood with the you know who's.  Ended up feeling light headed, extremely spacey, completely out there, crampy... eh - worried me.. ended up at the ER (Master's orders) and i was told my blood sugar had dropped.

So i read this thread out of curiousity......  thanks for the link Celeste!!

i've always gotten jittery, nervous.. my heart races... and i've always summed it up to anxiety.  Anxiety about what, i dunno..... but it drives me nuts.  Curl up in bed and try to "wait it out".  Reading the link.... it could be low blood sugar...and now i have a solution!!!  All these years...... lol

Hey, at the ER - i was told that eating stuff like peanut butter and drinking OJ is also supposed help with low blood sugar....

thanks - i learned something new!

HutchGarahl -> RE: low blood sugar (4/19/2007 6:57:18 AM)

My girl is diabetic. She keeps thing like poptarts handy, drinks juice every day and has choclate bars as well. I try to keep things in the car for when we go out to. She scares me sometimes though when her blood sugar drops. She gets pale as a ghost and very swoomy headed. But a quick sweet snack and some juice usually does the trick.
