"SAN YSIDRO BORDER CROSSING, Calif (Reuters) - The world's busiest land border crossing between the United States and Mexico is "saturated" and "grossly out of date" but it is unclear if Congress will provide the money to overhaul it, a senior U.S. official said.

A growing cross-border community of commuters and tougher security to catch illegal immigrants and narcotics smugglers mean drivers now spend up to 2-1/2 hours to cross from the Mexican city of Tijuana into San Diego.

"The San Ysidro facility is grossly out of date and we are typically saturated," Adele Fasano, director of California field operations for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, told Reuters in a interview this week."

I worked down in TJ a few months ago for a few weekends.

I have more relevant questions.

1)  Why do unarmed people with badges stand and watch you from the islands?  They are not empowered to detain people.  So all they do is stand and stare.

2)  When I tell the first person who approaches the car that I dont want the rug with a picture of Elvis or the ceramic Eagle, doesnt he get on the PeddlerPhone and tell all the other people selling them that I dont want one?

Had no UMs in the car, and they saw the look of menace on my face and backed away slowly from the car.

LMAO!


i been out of the USA 2x- Canada and Mexico-

[80s] both times it was easy to leave- but HARD to enter!
     
they can in fact detain u for 72 hours.

when i walked into mexico from yuma az- easy. well NO SIGNS IN ENGLISH- none!!!!   there was a sign "sanora"- with a big fancy hotel looking building on it. i didnt want a hotel- i wanted to go home.

unable to find my way into the us- i just walked in. with in seconds a some nonwhites were screaming at me. then a squad car came. made a huge deaal. had me to go back to MX- and go thru the proper entrance.  there was no symble signs either. when i got to teh clerk a big sceen was made. the guard was cool-tho.

on that trip- i flew from chicago to san diego- then rented a car and drove to AZ- yuma. explaining all this was a task- as i lived in a suburb called "palos hieghts".....

BTW- the US side of the border- say 20 miles into the US- at least near yuma is a dump. all broken down.

i did not feeel safe there.

the i took a trip driving from chicago thru detroit into windser ontario, up to toronto0-down thru naigara then into PA.  the candandian side really is nicer. less of a tourest trap- and classily done up.  anayhow my $100 clunker- i was not able to open truck- so i had to call AAA to break it open. NOTHING was IN my truck!!!   i felt safe in Ca- even at night in Toronto- a lovely city with many parks.

Sinergy:
The person on the island has a radio consequently they do not need a gun,   They are screeners.  Should you have a lot of spare time and money try not going to the search area if so directed.  I have had the opportunity to watch it as a spectator not a participant.
I always park on the U.S. side and walk over...the pedestrian line comming back is much quicker and uses a lot less fuel.  I also have not had anyone trying to sell me anything in the pedestrian line.

Status: offline 		The traffic not only cripples the border crossing but impacts all area traffic as well. I live just north of San Diego proper. My 15 mile commute for classes every morning is rarely less than 35 minutes. I was thrilled today when we got up to 35mph for about a quarter mile. The commute home today with the rain was 1 hour and 20 minutes and we aren't even talking about a peak commute time when I'm returning home from class at 1 or 2 in the afternoon.
I don't even think about getting to class in less than an hour if Temecula (another border check just north of me)decides to do spot check searches as well on any given day.

Think of it this way, Sinergy.
 
You know those impulse items near the checkout counter?
Well, those are there to attract the attention of bored and
impatient customers. 
 
The same applies to the rugs and ceramic items at the border. 

Now if they could sell me a flying carpet, that might be worth the dinero!
