I have Acne-it hit me when I was 32 after only having a few zits when I was a teenager and hardly any when I was in my 20s. I've always had mixed skin-oily nose, dry cheeks, and normal forehead skin.

Now my nose is still oily and almost zit free, but my cheeks are acne city and my forehead gets some. What is the best way to treat acne?

YOu should see a dermatologist or do a lot of self research.

There are many forms of acne, caused by many sources and treated in many different ways.

i do believe in physicians and their knowledge as i have two in my family i drive crazy lol

There's lots of antibacterials and stuff like that. You'll need to see a doc to get good results anyway, probably a dermatologist.

That said, if you've been through hormonal changes lately, had a massive infection, just completed a course of oral antibiotics, changed your intake of sugar and/or chocolate, or recently started or stopped medication or herbs, that could do it.

Proactive does work well. I second that you should see a Dermatologist.

Hiya, I had great skin all through school and through early 20's 'till I got an IUD ( birthcontroll) put in. Then I started getting cystic acne once a month (one or two painfull pimples on my chin).

I had the IUD taken out a couple of months ago and now I'm getting less issues with each period. Last month I was clear skined, this month I got a couple.

I tried Pro-active, it says it works for cystic acne, but it didn't help me at all, it just turned my sensitive skin red and burned like hell. Hehe, when I cancled it the lady got snotty with me and said "Mame, you do KNOW that acne never really goes away don't you?'

Anyway, the doctor says in a month or two more, my skin will go back to how it was before the IUD. ALso, now I'm taking Yasmin (Pill) and it says it helps clear skin, I believe it does, but it's also very drying as it takes away some oils from skin and hair.

The point to my rambling, is it could be a med your on.

BTW I know Proactive works for many, it was just to harsh for me.

There are many forms of acne so there is no one treatment that can help. Off the shelf treatments cannot assist and they can cause it to get worse. I suffered from what the doctor called stress related and she placed me on zindaclin and it doesn;t happen overnight, it takes at least 4 to 6 weeks of a two to three a day application to even start seeing a result and in all it took me at least 6 months to even start feeling I was clearing up.

Go to your doctor and get advice and prescription. If it is really severe then you may have to take oral medicine, but if you are on the pill remember to inform the doctor as some medicines can interfere with contraception.

If it's really severe acne, the Dermatologist may prescribe the anti-acne drug Accu-tane. It works, but has some possible effects, and you might have to sign a waiver. At least, that is what happened to me when I took it (which was over 20 years ago). I signed it, and took it, and it cleared up my skin, in no time flat.

I can't remember what the side effects can be for men (and they don't always occur). But Accu-tane does almost always work for cystic, and moderate forms of acne.

a trip to the doc would be best. even among teenagers there are so many different causes, an astringant can cure one case and cause havok on another. the white cleanser stuff from nozema does wonders, by restoring skin to it's own ph. i use nozema on everything, it's great on sunburns, too. Phoenix

If it's acne on the dry skin it is most likely not acne. Especially forming past your twenties. It's probably rosacea. Do you have unexplained redness on your skin, with or without itching, covering spots on your nose and cheeks? If you have that, along with the pimples, it's not acne at all. In that case acne medication only makes it worse, since it further dries out your skin. Their are specific medications for rosacea, but there is no cure. However, things like extreme heat, alcohol, chocolate, abrasive scrubbing and stress can be triggers. Do you have any other symptoms?

My best advice is to go to a dermatologist. A lot of over the counter medications can do more harm than good if you misdiagnose. The reason I know all that is that I have rosacea. I developed it right after I had my first unmentionable eight months ago. My skin changed from oily to dry, and where breakouts had never been a problem before, I had massive ones all of the sudden. I self-medicated and made it much worse before I wisened up and went to the doctor. Now it's better (my triggers are heat and exfoliants), the breakouts are completely gone, and I use artful makeup to hide whatever residual redness there is. Why don't you check out this site? It's severe cases, but rosacea can be very mild and is extremely common. Somewhere around fourteen million Americans suffer from it.

I have no health insurance right now. So getting to the Dr. is a little difficult. The Rosacea thing seems close, but I never see any of those blood vessels on the face. I don't get blackheads, like the rosacea page says you won't get if you have it. I get white heads. I do get acne scars here and there like Edwards James Olmos(just at about one millionth the severity). My cheeks are often red with the acne and then they will clear. I cut way back on pop for a month and it seemed to reduce. My cheeks are the worst affected area and shaving doesn't help. My jawline doesn't seem to be affected-very rarely do I get a zit there. My forehead will get red bump zits. Cheeks-whiteheads which will occasionally scar.

Not to be redundant, but there are several different types of rosacea. If you have any other symptoms other than the pimples it's probably rosacea. Cystic acne's the only other thing I can think of that comes close and it doesn't cover the redness. By the by, you don't have to see the blood vessels for it to be that. Any abnormal facial redness is either swelling or breaking of the blood vessels, you don't necessarily see them.

my heart goes out to you about the lack of health insurance. i have been in that situation once but my parents paid for me to continue my treatment for my thyroid. i wish you the best and hang in there!!
