Why do I like hoods? Before I met Mistress, I'd never worn anything but a rather cheap leather hood. I liked it, but only now do I realize how lacking it really was.

When I am hooded, I am without the ability to see, my hearing is limited, and this puts me in a weakened state. It takes away my senses and leaves me vulnerable, and in the control of Mistress. With the addition of earplugs, my helplessness is increased. Losing control in this way to another is a big part of my kink.

The first time Mistress allowed me to wear a rubber hood, I was speechless. The feel was so different than the leather hoods. It was much tighter, amd unlike a leather hood, there's no give. If you manage to stretch it a bit, it simply contracts and stays tight to your face. I've learned that rubber hoods come in varying thicknesses, and I enjoy the double or triple thick the best.

My favorite is the white rubber hood with only noseholes. It's double thick, and with earplugs and the stereo on, I cannot make out a sound beyond the confines of the hood. It's an incredible leap into sensory deprivation for me.  Just wearing the hood this way takes me into the zone many call sub-space.

Mistress has used a head harness as well as a muzzle on my hooded head, and each adds a unique element to the situation.

If you've never tried a rubber hood, I"d strongly encourage you to do so. The feeling is out of this world. Mistress tells me that my next hood will have a locking zipper. I cannot imagine how they work, but I know they make them. For now, we settle with simply locking the zipper to the back of my collar.

Yes, I could destroy the hood and rip it off, when my arms are free. But that's not the point. I guess it's something you have to experience to know.

I'd love to hear of others' experiences with rubber and/or leather hoods.

I think being they deaden sight and sound they help me focus more on the sensations and journey.
I too feel I am more in touch with what happens physically when I'm locked away from the stimulus of sight and sound in a hood.
I prefer leather hoods as the smell and feel of leather gets me going like rubber or latex never could.

Yes, I miss the smell of leather as well. I think that's why I enjoy the muzzle as much as I do, as it puts leather right by my airway. Mistress and I have toyed with the possibility of using a leather hood along with a rubber one. Only concern is that leather tends to dry the latex out, so it would surely not be worn as such for any length of time.

Hoods give me panic attacks. I think it is because I rely very strongly on being able to see my dominant for part of my reassurance during a scene. While I can handle scenes blindfolded, I prefer to be able to look over my shoulder and see him.

It used to be so bad that I couldn't even look at hoods on websites w/out getting the shakes. Now I have gotten to the point that I can look at them - it helps to put myself in a dominant mindset and consider how my subs would like to wear them - but the actual contemplation of wearing a hood can still make me panicky.

Perhaps this is because I am not a masochist, and I don't want to focus on the sensations I'm receiving, I want to focus on how much pleasure he is getting out of hurting me, making me flinch, making me cry. I wonder if I could wear a hood during sex to get used to them....

Maybe you're phobic of sensory deprivation or claustrophobic.
I'd say maybe start with one on your head like a hat when you work on the computer or watch tv or  something that will distract you without possibly messing up a good sexual encounter if you do flip out.
Over time gradually pull it down farher and farther over your face each time you waer it.
Maybe you can condition out the response.
Good Luck to you,

I am not phobic of sensory deprivation. I am claustrophobic, but the reactions I have to hoods are not due to claustrophobia.
If M decides he wants me to start wearing hoods, I'm sure he'll take the actions he finds necessary. Until then, I do not own a hood and his hood lives at his house, so keeping it on my head isn't much of an option. Even if it were, I don't have a problem with looking at hoods or them touching me. The problem is once they are on. Conditioning out the response is going to have to involve wearing it fully...probably for short periods of time then going to longer and longer periods of time. Thank you for the suggestions though!
