This post is also good for those Furry's out there.  I know you are!  I can smell you!!!

I'm a cougar fursona.  My spirit animal is also (shock) a cougar and strangely, White Rabbits!  Long ago my Cree Kokem let my Mother know, and it's just natural for me...

Just a blip in the life of me.

Vendaval -> RE: Totems (4/20/2007 2:30:35 PM)

Great topic, julia!

I cannot claim an actual totem because those are found in
the initiation ceremonies specific to particular Indigenous tribes.

I do have a strong affinity for wolves, felines, birds of prey,
owls and snakes.  I am a big animal lover in general, but
those call the strongest to me.

Blessed Be,

Vendaval

Joseph Cambpell is one of my spirit guides, sadly he is gone now. He did the anthropology that I would love to continue... honoring humanity without taking sides about religion. It does not matter if one believes in God or not, because God becomes an archetype too...very deep without becoming religious.

yes very interesting stuff that can apply to virtually anyone.  His parrallels are very astute imo, which is not to say i agree with him on all levels but i can certainly see his points.  You chose a good one.  People can use his work to shape their own destiny.

What a wonderful man, Joseph Campbell. His life's passion and research will always be with us.
I have his "Masks of God" series, Primitive, Oriental, Occidental and Creation Mythologies.

I found out recently my Daddy was familiar with his work, which made me happy.

Sinergy -> RE: Totems (4/20/2007 6:55:09 PM)

I studied Joseph Campbell in college, both as adjuncts to Feminist Theory and comparative religion.

What I most appreciated about his works is the candor with which he scrutinized different cultures and religions, without argumentation.  It was reading him, if I recall correctly, that religions which develop in the Desert (Mesopotamia, which includes Christianity, Islam, Judaism, etc) tend to follow the male archetype, and this archetype is stern and demanding and merciless in his punishment of those who disagree with it's edicts.  It was somebody else who pointed out that this fact, above all other facts, explains the antithesis and conflicts between Christians to Muslims to Jews.  In other words, their major issues and conflicts between these religions revolve around similarities, rather than differences.

He pointed out that those religions which developed in more forgiving lands, like New Guinea, Western Europe, etc., tend to worship the female (or mother) archetype.  Their goddess promises life and plenty and the interconnectedness of all life.  The lesson is to seek connection with and live within the system one is presented with, as opposed to viewing life and the system one lives in as something to be conquered.

He may be one of the reasons that when I study something today I try diligently to learn both the subject being presented and the context in which it developed.

I would have to say that my totem would be the Peregrine Falcon.  It sees things from far away without judgement.  I also see it as wandering with a sense of detachment from it all.  It keeps it's own counsel.  It goes where it will.  It wanders far above the hustle and flow and tries to leave the smallest footprint on the land that it can.  They mate for life and are extremely protective of their offspring.

Just me, could be wrong, but there you go.

I am part Blackfoot Native and grew up mostly around the Ojibwa and Lakota and in my spirituality I most often walk on the Red Road.

I have had animal guides since childhood my ones closest and most powerful in my life are a Timberwolf and a Blackpanther, there is also a lamb that walks with me that I am quite fond of.

edited to add; Thank you and I'm so glad you thought twice and didn't put this is the Radom and Stupidity forum. It's very meaningful to a lot of people[;)].

listening to campbells  work reminded me of the silly days when people were trying to separate themselves from thier actions.   Ever hear anyone say i dont hate you personally i just hate the way you xyz....  like somehow they are intrinsically separated.

I appreciate putting cultures and what they do into context too, I guess that is why I enjoy Gertz so much.

I am not surprised you picked such a noble creature...smiles

From the standpoint of interpersonal relationships, it makes a huge difference.

Somebody does a behavior.

I criticize the person who did the behavior, odds are fairly good I have a fight on my hand because people tend to get defensive when personally criticized.

I criticize the behavior and point out that it is not the person I have an issue with, odds are fairly good I dont have a fight on my hands because the person can choose or not choose to do the behavior.  The person does not necessarily feel personally attacked.

StellaByStarlite -> RE: Totems (4/23/2007 4:33:58 PM)

About 8 or 9 years ago, when I was experimenting with Paganism, I lit a candle and meditated on wisdom. The next morning, I discovered a huge, gorgeous garden spider in my bushes.

My then-husband left me that night. =)

For some reason, from that moment on, I always linked spiders with wisdom earned the hard way (which is usually the case) We never ever kill spiders in the house, they're like patient old women.. benign yet terrible at the same time. If I had a totem, the spider would be it, since they do inspire reverence in me.

astarri -> RE: Totems (4/24/2007 9:37:41 PM)

my totem animal is the rat ...very complimentary i know *shakes her head ... but rats are known for their survival skills and being able to exist on what is available. We have a tendancy to hoard because there is a fear that there wont be enough for us later. It is this panic that drives us to be fiercely loyal to the people in our lives.
my spirit guide is the wolf ... he has come to me in several dreams ...freaked me out originally but i have come to accept him
