Well if people who know you don't get it when they hear it from you....... why would they 'get it' from us any more easily?

What did you say to them?

Maybe the easiest way for others who aren't into the lifestyle is to discuss TPE.

Explanation.

D = Control
s = obey
gray areas in between = safewords, hard limits, and more training.

The question being What is D/s relationship?
Maybe you have a difficult time explaining what your answer might be because you dont get it?

I'm unable to understand why that's a hard thing to explain.

why do we all see the color green and why are there color blind people that don't see it but know it is there?

it is what it is, and its like  Miss Argentina  in Beetle Juice---

That is what it is to you,  and thats what it is to them, and so on....it's a personal thing.

MrBlimpie

but I find much agreement with part of MadRabbits definition (the former part of it, moreso than the latter---)

Ummmm.  I don't care how well someone understands something like D/s, it can often be hard to explain to someone else.  Our lifestyle is the kind of thing that is easy for those so inclined to understand but foreign to people not inclined or attracted to it, so in my experience many people find it hard to get the concept which we all understand perfectly well, across to vanilla people.

Greetings

The definitions used by the masses; none will ever be the same as another. Trying to define something such as this to another who has preconceived ideas of what it COULD be; you will never be able to help them understand.

Try instead asking them what THEY perceive it to be and then compare your own defintions against that.

I wish you well

The easiest way I know is to compare it to something that is within their knowledge base. You know how when people have to work together in a group, one person always evolves to become the leader of the group. Some of the others seem to chafe at accepting the leadership of another but some people work very happily at their assigned task. The natural leader is the dominant and the person who happily accepts their leadership is the submissive when applied to interpersonal relationships.

Ds, dominance and submission
One partner is dominant in the relationship and the other submits to the dominants direction and will.

Ds is how I live, BDSM is what I do.

The real question is what do you believe Ds means and how do you employ it in your life? I've dedicated an entire web site called Ds Haven to exploring the question; "What is Ds?" In the end, it's up to you to define what Ds means in your own life.

*chuckles* I wouldn't be surprised if that is how Valyraen would explain it. Of course he might say, "It's where I have a girl who will go buy me beer whenever I want".
