I swear to goodness, if Robert Gates' and George Bush's big secret mission in Iraq turns out to be a WALL to split the country into three sections, I'm going to start the revolution. Did I hear the news correctly? They're building a CONCRETE WALL across Baghdad? THAT's what they needed more troops for? As IF they won't blow the thing up. Yikes! I want my tax money back. TM

If it's bad info, I heard the same report. I DIDN'T hear if this is a US scheme, or out of the Iraqi Gov't. It's an awful image, fodder for the propagandists, but don't we Americans say that good fences make good neighbors? I don't even know if I'm kidding anymore when I say we should start an Iraqi version of the Jerry Springer Show, with opposing clerics and neighborhood warlords duking it out amidst those nearly unbreakable chairs.

Bah.

There are clear benefits to the construction of such a wall; The local economy will benefit by the construction - there will be work for thousands of transport personnel, importers and builders, and then hundreds of guards. The Iraqi cartography industry will benefit in the need for new maps, and the wall being blown up intermittently and redesigned to prevent further blowings up, the whole cycle will start again. And then there's the advertising space on both sides of the wall to sell - valuable considering it will make the TV news for decades due to the explosions that will take place around it. How long's this wall? Won't they just go 'round it like the French Maginot Line? Planning seems to be top notch then, build a wall and then leave - presuming they do plan to leave in this century. Great ain't it, people are fighting.......what are we goin' to do, then?.....I know, we'll build a wall. The Romans had better diplomatic skills than this. Hats off to them for providing the evidence that devolution does exist in the animal world.

I guess it will be like protecting the Alamo.

Strange idea. It's definately outside the box, as far as ideas have gone. (This isn't to say it's unpredicented, but, seriously, how many people actually thought of it?) I'd be hesitant to judge it harshly based on analogy. Let's think out some pro's and con's to it. I realize the thought of Bush suggesting something so odd leads many who disrespect him to immediately find the idea ghastly, and I also realize that this is certainly a strange idea. But, com'n, we tie people to walls and beat them, then have sex with them, for fun, or we're tied to walls, beaten, and raped, for fun! We're the people who are supposed to seriously consider weird ideas. So. It's a big, freaking wall. Pros: -It'll stimulate economy to build. -It'll inconvinence terrorists from getting around and force them to travel through more check points to get around town. -It'll make it much, much more difficult to sneak explosives and weapons from section to section. -It'll keep people who are mad at eachother apart more . (Corner time!) -It'll give Iraqies something to direct their hatred at- something people can let them tear down in ten years- in a unifying act. -It'll probably make some people feel more secure. -It'll be a display of American commitment. Cons: -It'll divert funds from other areas. -It'll inconvinence normal traffic, forcing a lot through check points. -It'll probably piss off some people. -It'll be a display of American audicity. While I can respect passion on a subject, I'd encourage people to approach such things from a logical, cold, calculating, and removed prospective. This doesn't mean you can't consider emotional consquences (i.e., people feeling safer but violated in Iraq), but you shouldn't make a display of them yourselves. If, ultiamtely, you believe it's a bad idea, that can be stated, but the "OMG, what a dumb idea! I can't believe this is happening!" isn't exactly productive. So, my Pro's vs. Con's list is pretty short. I'm sure there's tons on each sides. Any additions? Challenges to standing pointing? All I ask is that people be level-headed and reasonable in considering an issue that really is going to touch the future of many.
