Vendaval -> Iran - Contra Affair, types of weapons sold? (4/22/2007 9:08:15 PM)

Anyone recall what types of weapons were being sold to Iran during the Reagan Administration?
This may become very relevant, very soon.

mid/low grade conventional missles for one thing. I imagine various small arms as well. I was hairless creature at the time.

Before the revolution our government supported a guy they called the sha of iran. We sold the sha the same type of grade A wepons that we sold to israel. This included, but was not limited to fighter jets, missles, tanks and air defense systems................and that nuclear reactor everyone is so worried about. That's right history buffs, if you look inside it has a sign that says "Made in America".

When they took over our embassy in 1979 we quit selling them replacement parts. We also sold similar equipment to Saddam Hussein in Iraq who used our wepons to wage a war against Iran that began in 1980 and lasted for 8 years.......................no coincidence here, Reagans term in office............. 1981- 1989. by the way for anybody that cares, the mustard gas that saddam used both against the iranians and his own people was made in Conneticut.

He secretly agreed to sell replacement parts to the Iranian army so that they could defend themselves against Hussein in exchange for the hostages. He then continued to sell them weapons to gain favor with some factions in Iran and used the profits to fund an illegal war in Nicaragua. http://www.factmonster.com/ce6/history/A0825447.html

It is really not a factor now because most of the Iranian army now has weapons made in France, Germany, and China. But the main Nuclear plant is still ours.

This is basicly the reason that America is so hated in that part of the world...........we have a history of helping to overthrow ELECTED governments and then selling weapons to both sides of a conflict that we really started.

Why do I feel like I just got a history lesson straight from the Rocky & Bullwinkle Show

Probably the most important items sold were replacement parts for F-14 fighters. While this plane is mostly out of date, the Iranians use them primarily as a type of AWACS system to guide other aircraft.

Wire guided anti-tank missiles were sold in large numbers. These wouldn't be a danger to M1 tanks, but Bradleys and Stryker APC's would be vulnerable.

Could it be because you voted for Beavis and Butthead?
