"How the Pilgrims shaped our sex lives - Sexploration - MSNBC.com"

"Our forefathers bequeathed us with some serious hang-ups"

By Brian AlexanderMSNBC contributor
Updated: 8:29 a.m. PT Nov 22, 2006 "The laws of Plymouth Colony echo Leviticus. You could be sentenced to death for sodomy, rape, buggery and, for a time, adultery. (Sodomy and buggery might be synonymous to us, but buggery apparently referred more to bestiality.)

Some Christian preachers today quote Leviticus 20, approvingly arguing that both the Old and New Testament are the infallible word of God.

And on his farm he had a sheep...

In practice, though, even the Pilgrims did not typically enforce death for sex. In fact, only one person was put to death for a sex crime in the colony, poor Thomas Graunger, a teenage farm boy who, perhaps flush with the surge of hormones, turned to those he knew best. His story could make you look at the Thanksgiving turkey in a whole new way.

Governor William Bradford recounted the tale:

“He was this year detected of buggery, and indicted for the same, with a mare, a cow, two goats, five sheep, two calves and a turkey … He was first discovered by one that accidentally saw his lewd practice towards the mare. (I forbear particulars.) Being upon it examined and committed, in the end he not only confessed the fact with that beast at that time, but sundry times before and at several times with all the rest of the forenamed in his indictment.”
As punishment, he was forced to watch all the animals killed. At first, the court had a problem figuring out which sheep Thomas favored — sheep looking pretty much alike — but Thomas helpfully pointed out his sex partners. After being killed, they were buried in a pit, and then Thomas himself was hanged. If you wonder what the animals did to deserve it, Leviticus was cited by the court: “If a man lie with a beast, he shall surely be put to death; and ye shall slay the beast.”

Though Thomas was the only person executed for a sex crime, punishments were still brutal. Even for lesser crimes, like fornication, you could receive whippings, brandings, wearing a Hawthorne-esque scarlet letter, time in the stocks, fines and banishment. Yet if court records are any indication, there was no shortage of colonists willing to tempt fate.  "

Yep. On this side of the pond we got rid of a lot of hang ups on the voyages to the new world.[:D] Most didn't go for religious freedom but because they couldn't tolerate living with people of different beliefs. It's quite funny when you think they have no choice but to now.[:D]

Though I used to live near a black stocking church and what a fucked up miserable bunch they were so they didn't all go.[:o]

Severe Protestant churches. I used live around the corner from the chapel in Rotterdam where the pilgrim fathers visited before leaving for Plymouth on the Speedwell before changing to the Mayflower and on to the new world. The chaple still hosts a very protestant congregation. Before that I lived in an area where it was frowned on to watch TV on Sunday and even ride a bike. Woment wore hats to church and had (still do) large families because a woman's role was to have babies. Very wierd and other worldy.

I am a person who was quite influenced by the Puritans and their views on nearly everything. It runs deep in our family. Very deep.

When my grandfather was killed quite horrifically in a grass fire (he was a volunteer fireman), my grandmother, my mother, her siblings and all their spouses and children sat in church during the service dry eyed. Our family's motto: We grieve at home, out of sight and privately.

I spent my entire growing up years attempting to get my mother to act in any other way other than stoic. My father used to piss her off just to get her to show emotion. She is a STRONGLY emotional woman but up until recently, she considered it unseemly to show that emotion.

When it comes to sex, that too is something that amongst my relatives, is just not discussed. When it is discussed, it's discussed with dispassionate distance. Not that it's distasteful, but it's just something no one needs to talk about. It was largely my father's influence that allowed my mother to explore and be more open about things, but she is still a very quiet woman.

When my mother met my father, there was pandemonium amongst her side of the family. "He's .. POLISH!! He's going to want SEX and you'll wind up with a house full of BABIES!! Is that what you REALLY want?!" (This said by a woman with four children of her own.) My mother just smiled and raced to the alter. Her father kept her mother at bay so she could.

As to why our family is so personally touched by the legacy of the Puritans/Pilgrims...

My ancestor was John Robinson, who was considered the pastor to the Pilgrim Fathers. Members of his parish numbered 300 and included William Bradford, who eventually became the Governor of the Plymouth Colony. John Robinson was the person to call for the vote to go to the New World and was instrumental in the preparations that took place to go. He never made the trip but his sons did and so... here am I.

It may have been a long time ago, but his legacy runs deep, and in one way or another, evidence of that Calvinistic view of things shows itself often in my family.

Do you think the repression of our forefathers has had any influence on certain sexual acts performed today?  Not meaning how some people are still repressed, but meaning a love of voyeurism, of sneaking around, of bondage or being "forced", of doing things in general that seem "naughty".  Could some of people's desire for these things stem from that era?  I think it's very likely.

Edited to add:  I'm not being very clear today.  LOL.  I'm trying to say something along the lines of, "Do you think we desire that pent-up sexuality, thrilling "badness" and finally fulfilled repression because of the actuality of our ancestors' repression?

My inner child just died.  LOL.

I'm just trying to envision what doing an, "Esther Primm thing with your ass," would look like.  <shudder>  I think I've found my new pet phrase for those times when I want to pull the pervert trump card on my friends.  They need to realize who their Queen Pervert is.  Bow down my pervert minions, your Queen is here.  Thank you for helping me maintain my reign.

Just a thought.

No.  It's not.  I'm taking a hint from our forefathers and repressing it.  I'm officially in denial.

I just spent 4 hours working on a design project and then had to clean up all the paint
and brushes, palette knives, etc.  Thanks for the laughs you two!  I really needed that!
