Iran warns women over slack dressing

by Farhad PouladiSun Apr 22, 5:22 PM ET

Iran has issued more than a thousand warnings and arrested dozens in a new drive aimed at forcing women whose dress is deemed inappropriate to adhere to Islamic dress rules, officials said Sunday.

The nationwide drive -- an annual pre-summer crackdown given greater prominence this year -- is aimed primarily at women whose coats are seen as too tight, trousers excessively short or hejabs (headscarves) overly loose.

It foresees handing out warnings and guidance to women found to have infringed its dress code in public. Those who show resistance to change can be arrested and then be the subject of legal proceedings.

Social Security report to be released

By MARTIN CRUTSINGER, AP Economics Writer 49 minutes ago

The odds that President Bush will be able to make significant changes in either Social Security or Medicare before leaving office appear increasingly slim.

But that doesn't mean Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, the administration's point man in the effort, has given up trying to achieve a breakthrough in what Bush once termed the top domestic priority for his second term.

The debate will be revived Monday when the trustees of Social Security and Medicare provide their annual update on the health of the government's two biggest benefit programs.

The new report is expected to make only small changes in the estimates made last year for when both trust funds will be depleted.

Last year, the trustees put the date that Social Security would exhaust all the resources in its trust fund at 2040, one year earlier than previously estimated.

It's Royal vs. Sarkozy in French runoff

By ANGELA CHARLTON, Associated Press Writer 56 minutes ago

Conservative Nicolas Sarkozy holds an advantage over his Socialist rival Segolene Royal after the two advanced to the second round of France's presidential election, narrowing the vote to a choice between the tough-talking former interior minister or the first woman with a chance of becoming the country's leader.

The race is now on for voters in the middle ground and others who deserted the left and right in favor of farmer's son and lawmaker Francois Bayrou, who placed third on Sunday in one of the big surprises of the campaign. Both Sarkozy and Royal planned rallies Monday night.

I imagine somebody in the administration pointed out that if they change social security, the government will lose a steady source of monetary income at a time when they are forced to borrow from everybody, including the Social Security Trust.

If you are under age 40, you will never see social security. By the time the government is done handing out benefits to illegal aliens and by the time the baby-boomers are done with it....there won't be a penny left.

If Social Security was revised, one of the things required, would be that the government would have to pay back all the IOU's they have issued on it. The US calculates how much they will have to pay that year, and then borrows what is left over to do other thinsg with.

Did you know there is no law that even states you are entitled to receive any of the money back you paid in? The government enjoys that power and likely will never give even a portion of it up. The reason being is there are too many sheep that want the government to save them.

MOSCOW - Former President Boris Yeltsin, who hastened the collapse of the Soviet Union by scrambling atop a tank to rally opposition against a hard-line coup and later pushed Russia to embrace democracy and a market economy, died Monday at age 76.

He died of heart failure at the Central Clinical Hospital, news agencies quoted Sergei Mironov, head of the presidential administration’s medical center, as saying.

Eric Volz was an American expatriate who had staked his future on a place far from home. But in a flash, he became a monster to people in Nicaragua. It all began with a horrific murder. This report aired Sunday, April 22, on Dateline NBC.

Last "Black Friday," for its annual post-Thanksgiving sales blitz, Wal-Mart Stores decided to slash the price of one of the hottest electronics items for the holidays—the 42-inch flat-panel TV—to $988. The world's largest retailer had staked similarly audacious positions before, in numerous product categories, as part of its quest to remain U.S. retailing's "low-price leader." In turn, Wal-Mart's move caused a freefall in prices of flat-panel televisions at hundreds of retailers — to the glee of many people who were then able to afford their first big-screen plasma or liquid-crystal-display model.

Now, it is becoming apparent that Wal-Mart's calculated decision to break the $1,000 barrier for flat-panel TVs triggered a disastrous financial meltdown among some consumer-electronics retailers over the past four months

Rather liberal of Iran not to have encouraged stoning in the streets.

Astounding, actually.
