Greetings, Having spent more time than I should have today reading the forums, I was struck with the thought of "Truth in Advertising". In all honesty a personal site is nothing more than personal advertising. With that in mind, how much truth is there in our profiles? How much of your profile information has been sanitized to pass muster? Do we truthfully advertise ourselves or do we behave more like the fabled "used car salesman"? If someone does not measure up to our standards, the first response is often "fake, wannabe" or one of the myriad of other such labels prevalent in forums. Are we truly putting forth an honest representation of who and what we are, such that when we do meet with someone in real life that they will find us true to our words? There is anonymity sitting behind a monitor shielded by the vast net we call cyberspace. How much does that shield taint a true representation of ones self? Perhaps it's the anonymity of the internet which just makes it too easy to escape reality and become what you never could be in real life? There is an extremely high percentage of Sci-fi and role play fans involved in the BDSM community. Perhaps reality is just an evasive quality in the BDSM community. Something to ponder. Other view points are always welcome.

In a situation such as this, we only have our words to go on. Pictures, if we choose to share. If we ourselves are serious about ourselves and our pursuits and have the sense to want the best for a potential partner, why would we wish to be truly disingenuous with others? Jeff

i don't know about anyone else, but my profile tells it like it is; no beating around the bush, no made-up bullshit that will help me 'sell' myself to anyone, no ten year old picture... what you see is what you get! there's truth in my advertising; just ask anyone who's been with me; you can find the ones from this site listed under the positive experiences forum.

I know alot of people push their assets, i think that aspect is an advertising concept. Who is ever going to list all their faults? And if they did, they would be slammed for that too. I have changed my profile through time to try to do a better job of getting across what i want and limit contact from those that don't fit what i am looking for. Somedays it works, most days not. The thing i don't understand is the people who put nothing or a one liner on their profile. You have one chance to make a first impression. If you're really lucky you get 2. One in your mail to me and another when i check out your profile. If both are one liners or less, i don't need to wait for strike three

I guess that I don't really understand why anyone who is serious about eventually meeting and forming a bond with someone would not take the time to find the words that most accurately convey who they are.

My profile is 100% accurate. I have nothing to hide. My picture is up to date and soon will be replaced with a more clear picture. I don't like it when people lie to me, therefore..why should I lie? It's like the pot calling the kettle black. If there is something someone wants to know that may not be in my profile...they are always free to ask...though I can't promise i'll tell as I am a private person and believe all anyone needs to know till I get to know them better is in my profile.

I will only counter by saying this.... we are, in all of life, selling a used car somewhere. If you do not embrace that about yourself, you are hiding something from yourself. Do you go to work in your pj's stinking of last nights sleep with cheerios stuck to your chin? No, it would not be acceptable on one level, and on another, you do not want to present that sort of image of yourself to your co-workers and to others around you... if you truly didn'tcare, you would not have a concept of self respect. I would say that it is foolish to lump everyone together in one group because they are on a site. I did not write my profile, nor provide the images on it. It was a gift for me from my former owner, and means the world to me... perhaps he was trying to sell his old, used, car... who knows. There is nothing wrong with wanting to present yourself as the best of who you are... in the end, the best of you, is still you.

I don't think it would be very productive to list all your dumb, annoying, wierd little habits on a profile. I mean, if I were looking for somebody, I sure as hell wouldn't put "I have this compulsion to always let people know they have a cliffhanger, even perfect strangers" Much MUCH better to just say "I'm honest" Speaking of outright honesty... what if your 75 year old aunt bought a hideous pantsuit and was SO proud of it? Would you be honest and risk hurting her feelings? OR would you humor the ol' lady and tell her she looks great? My point is.. is that profiles don't even BEGIN to cover "how somebody really is" so why not throw out the parts of yourself you really like?

Ok, I agree with the basic "Truth in Advertising" statement. There is no point in trying to mislead anyone as to what a person looks like, giving false interpretations of themselves, etc., etc. It's one of the reasons I put the "real" picture of Myself up. So no one is misled about what I look like. The opinions I state on the boards are My own. They aren't always popular. Sometimes people like them. Judge for yourself. On the profile matter..... As I've said many times before, I basically threw it up to gain access to the boards. Seeking or not had nothing to do with it. I mostly came for the discussion, but I do happen to be seeking at this time. One of these days, I will write something worthy of who I am and what I'm looking for, but in general, I'm pretty much open as far as the things I post. I figure that is a better way to get to know Me than a one sided profile. It requires a little research on a subs part to find out, but one, I'm worth the work, and two, if he can't handle a simple assignment of getting to know Me through some of My writings, I doubt he'll be able or willing to do many other things. greetings mistress melissa, i strive to be truthful in my advertising, and hope that i don't misrepresent myself in my posts OR on my profile. that said, there are many, many, many aspects to me and to the way i live that -aren't- shown in my posts and profile, so it's not possible to get the full picture. but from what i do share (and i share what i say as well as answering, to the best of my ability, anyone's questions), i am truthful. annabelle.

my biggest hurdle would be remembering anything that i had made up....LOL with my memory i'd be busted in 5 mins....honesty is the right thing...and the easiest to remember....

Lies of omission....lol. I think that we all are selective about what we share on our profiles, leaving out the bad, playing up the good. It is just human nature.
