Ok, As many know, Michigan is not in the best of shape these days. You may not know these places, but they're here to illustrate a point.

Detroit is closing 34 schools
Royal Oak closed 3 schools last year.
Mt. Clemens is laying off 24 teachers this year
Southfield, as the rumor mill runs, is offering an early retirement and it's expected at least 100 of its teachers will accept. There is no word as to whether those positions will be filled.
And Hazel Park met last night to discuss closing 3 of its schools

So...what's a person to do if they want to stay in Michigan and do silly things like eat and not live in a box.?

What I'm asking is for a bit of a brainstorming session of sorts.

What can someone do with an education degree in Special Ed that does not involve leaving the state. I already know I can go to Texas. I'm certified there and there is a ready job market.

However, I have some significant things that mean I have to stay here, first and foremost, an ex who will go through the courts to make sure his children stay here. So...moving is not an option for me - right now.

I have been trying to figure out a career change that would work to bring in money while I learn the trade/job/skill and one that I could depend on to make sure my kids had such things as food, shelter, clothing and a safe place to live.

Looking for all ideas.

Thanks,

juliet

Given your skills, and that these reflect your personality, and the general downturn you relate in your state's condition - circumstances which almost always lead to a rise in crime, I would advise looking into a career as a parole officer or something like that. If its anything like it is here in the UK, the parole system will be crying out for recruits and will train you at full (and adequate) pay - and I doubt you'd need much more than the legal training side of things as I'd lay a bet that much of what you learned for your degree will cover the rest.

I doubt its an easy job, and you would meet many "colourful characters", but I'm sure your education skills and personality would make you ideal.

How 'bout social work?
Elderly care.. hospice.
Nursing... anything in the health care industry
Do you have any telemarketing call centers? Call centers sometimes snatch college graduates up and give them management positions.
hell, try restaurant managing. As long as you have *any* degree, you have a chance at middle management.

As another Rust Belt dweller, I completely understand your plight. There are ways to get around it, but you might have to accept the fact that these jobs wouldn't be your first choice, lol
Um, I'm not sure about Michigan, but a few hospitals here have
very good nursing programs, and they'll give you a bonus if you work for them. Some even offer financing for further education. Like, you could initially start out as a nurse's aid, and work your way up to LPN.

Good luck. =)

Depends on how much money you need to make a week, and if you can work with it varying.  I go to college full time, and I work part time in a decent waterfront restaurant.  I make more working part time there than I made working a full time admin assistant job AND a part time job combined, which is what I did before I went back to school.  In summers, I usually work two jobs and manage to pack away a LOT of money (summer is also our "busy season" since we're waterfront), enough so that I have not had to take out any kind of loans for tuition.

The trick is getting a job in a higher-end restauarant where the tips are higher, and being able to get enough tables turned over.

I work with all sorts of people - most are educated, or at some point in their education.   We have a lot of people with bachelor's and master's degrees working there so they can work part time around their families, rather than work full time.  Every spring it's a big deal to see who is graduating this year.   (Last year we had about 6 graduate;  this year I think it's 4)

That said - there are lean weeks where shifts are scarce, tables are scarce, and money is tight.  There's no medical and no paid vacations.  Sometimes it's tough to juggle work scheduling, classes, and school activities (I'm very active in student life). You work a lot of nights and you work every weekend and you work every holiday.  Being under-tipped is sometimes an issue, although the better the restaurant, the less that's a problem.  (Under-tipping is less than 18% on good service; keep in mind that servers have to tip out between 15-25% of their tips to busers, bar; restaurants typically do not pay servers more than $3 an hour, so less than 15% tips REALLY HURT).  You do have to learn to bank money when you have good weeks so you have a reserve to draw on during the slow weeks.

Overall, for me, it works while I'm in school.  Even on the slow weeks, I make more money that if I had a "regular" job that paid by the hour.  I'm fairly healthy so I'm winging it for a while without health insurance (knock on wood).  I bank a lot of money so it doesn't kill me to take a week off once or twice a year even though it's unpaid.

Childcare
Therapy assistant (hospitals and aged care facilities employ them to assist the physio's and occupational therapists)
Justice department
youth work
are there any uni's or vocational colleges - trainer/tutor
are there any children’s hospitals where you are - they have teachers help the kids who are long-term patients
carer - aged care, people with disabilities, respite care.

I don't know what the labour market in the USA is like, in Australia we are crying out for skilled/qualified  workers such as nurses and tradespeople as well as people to work in hospitality and cleaning.  Because of the push to reduce the number of people receiving government assistance we are also needing more and more people to work in employment agencies.

Thanks for the meth lab idea.. Unfortunately, I'd end up taking all the claritin-D for my allergies and sinus problems, so that's out.

I have family members who need me, so the whole go to iraq idea doesn't work either. Perhaps some that are workable?

anyone i ever met from Michigan was nice. it also is a lovely state. for what it is worth almost every state is having financial woes despite the feds touting a booming economy.

i seen moores documentary on Flint.   what was the title. roger and me.  it really was sickning!  no matter what u think of moor- that film is a must see.  the irony is u can plug in amost any state for the plight of Michigan.

consider this tho- Michigan sits on one of the worlds most valueble commodity.  fresh water- via teh great lakes.

with population growth and lack of tecknolgy to desalinify water- your state is poised to enjoy a huge resource.  fresh water.

a big part of michigans base is about to explode in china. u watch.  i blame this on the slowness of teh auto industry to embrace altanative enrgy.

we are indeed an aging population. look for a job in industry that makes it possible for old folks to live in thieir homes longer.

greed is nothing new per human kind.

may i suggest- perhaps getting rid of some frills. cutting back on some of the expenses. i know this is hard- but if u had to live in a hut the basics are food water- heat-

as we speak ppl are at the mall buyng junk- on the credit card- well bankruptsy reform has em in for a surprise.

the way i see it many are living on credit,. not any real job growth....

A nanny job with a special needs child might work.  Daughter is an OT but wasn't happy in her job and is now looking into that.  It can pay very well with the right family.

GoddessDustyGold -> RE: A kinda sorta way of getting cheap employment advice (4/25/2007 4:53:41 PM)

Since your field of exeprtise is "special ed", I would seriously look into opening your own, limited, special child care facility out of your home.  Check out the state laws, and see about taking on a very few special children who are not yet in school, or who need after school care.  State laws do limit the number of children you can care for in a private setting, but it can be done, and it is usually better for the children too.  I am a believer that if you can't get a job, you can create a job.
Use your talents and education to create a demand for your unique service.

SunNMoon -> RE: A kinda sorta way of getting cheap employment advice (4/25/2007 6:01:46 PM)

Ok I haven’t read anyone else. Here are a few things I can think of:
1)      private testing centers for learning disabilities. I know I’ve used them before.
2)      Working for a college, in there disability center. You can be a big help, since some schools don’t understand learning disabilities at all.
3)      Also private tutoring. I had one for a year when I was younger, it was a big help.
Those are things that I can think of (fast) that relate to your degree. I’m not a lot of help since I’m about to start on the job quest myself.

:)

Archer -> RE: A kinda sorta way of getting cheap employment advice (4/25/2007 7:27:44 PM)

Look at the possible market in tutoring kids who are on the cusp of Special Ed needs. The students the system will be trying to mainstream due to over crowding in the schools left open.
File a grant application with the state and Federal Government to provide for just that.

Boy, this "Global Economy" is such a great deal for Americans, isn't it? Every business wants to "outsource" but they still want access to *our* markets.
A lot of people from Michigan are moving here to Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Much cheaper to live here than up North! Much nicer weather too!
One of my neighbors is retired from G.M. and has a 'Vette.
I don't know what to tell you.
From what I've read the longterm outlook for Michigan doesn't look good unless we get out of these rediculous "trade" deals.

mstrj69 -> RE: A kinda sorta way of getting cheap employment advice (4/25/2007 8:16:02 PM)

A lot depends on how quick you need another job.  Might look into going after a post graduate degree and taking a part time job so once you get your post graduate degree, might be able to teach at a college. I have not heard of any of those being closed down.  Everything else I thought of has already been mentioned.

popeye1250 -> RE: A kinda sorta way of getting cheap employment advice (4/25/2007 9:37:47 PM)

Here's an odd idea, run for Senate on the platform of getting us out of these job-killing free-trade deals.
