ORIGINAL: Vendaval "40,000 pounds of cocaine seized at sea" 2 hours, 32 minutes ago "ALAMEDA, Calif. - The Coast Guard began unloading more than 40,000 pounds of cocaine seized from three ships off the Central American coast, much of it from a single bust considered the largest in U.S. maritime history. " http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070424/ap_on_re_us/record_cocaine_bust;_ylt=Ak0RFe3voMSh5OiPpal5JCcXIr0F Wow, that's a lot! The most that we ever got when I was in the USCG was about 12,000 lbs one time I think. Most loads were 5-10 k. One time we were following a boat for three days waiting for "permission" from the State Dept to board them when at 0600 monday morning off the coast of New Jersey we started seeing smoke comming from the boat and we could then go ahead and board without permission to "render assistance." They set the ship on fire and booby trapped it, cut holes in the deck, cut fire hoses etc. They all came out with their suitcases and got in a lifeboat and lowered it. We pulled up alongside and turned our fire hoses on it but it was going too good. After about 7 hours it sunk and bales of marijuana started popping up, hundreds of them! We grabbed about 25 bales for evidence and then started machine gunning the rest. After that we went over to the lifeboat and arrested the crew. Then we machine gunned their lifeboat as it was a "Hazzard to Navigation." It was a pretty good sized boat about 150 feet long like one of those coastal freighters so who knows how much they had onboard.
