We are going on vacation at last! I have been begging for almost 2 years and we are going on vacation!
Ok, maybe it's not a huge vacation, but we are going to Niagara Falls for a few days and I am very excited. We will be going in about a week (he is a spur of the moment traveler) and be staying for two nights. I have never been there so here is my question. What is there to do in that area that is relatively inexpensive? Also, is there anything that I need to know/have for crossing the border into Canada (besides a photo ID)?

sweetnygirl -> RE: Niagara Falls (4/30/2005 5:17:09 PM)

I haven't been there since I was about 10, so I'm sure it's changed a lot since,but I found these websites that might be helpful, they looked like they had a lot of information on them- www.infoniagara.com & www.niagara-usa.com . I think you might need a copy of your birth certificate, my mom & sister were up there about 8 weeks ago & I thought they mentioned that they needed it to cross the border. It doesn't hurt to make sure. Have a great time.

Yup. You need either a passport or a photo ID and a birth certificate (or an embossed, notarized copy) to cross the border now.

Read this for more info.

Thanks, I looked everywhere and I couldn't find any information. You would think they would want you to be able to find it.
One of my friends told me that she heard you have to get a special insurance liability card before you can cross the border. Has anyone else heard of anything like this?

Hi there!

If you are a US citizen you do not need a passport. You do need to bring photo ID, such as your driver's license, and sometimes they will ask for your birth certificate, or social security card.

Canada Customs is not usually the problem. It's the US customs officials, upon returning to the states, that are more likely to require identification.

I work in the tourist industry, in Niagara Falls, Ontario, and it's very rare to hear somebody having difficulty coming into Canada. I actually work within view of the US/Canada border. It can get really congested with traffic, at times. If you are driving, your best bet is to come during the week, and leave before Sunday. Sundays are the worst days for traffic, crossing the border.

You are coming at an ideal time, though, before Victoria Day and Memorial Day, when everything gets really busy and hotel rates go up drastically. Actually, there's a couple hotels running great specials this next week. Competition is pretty fierce this time of year, and you can find 2 night getaways, that include breakfast both mornings and dinner one night, for between $120 and $150 CDN, plus tax. That translates to about $100 to $120 US funds.

Both casinos have absolutely wonderful buffets that are quite reasonable in price. There's some great sites to see, the Butterfly conservatory is absolutely amazing. Niagara-on-the-lake is a town worth seeing. It is one of the oldest cities in Ontario. There are several wonderful wineries that offer tours and wine tasting.

In Niagara Falls, itself, there's plenty to keep you occupied. Two casinos, a trip up the Skylon Tower, is worthwhile. The view from the top is amazing.

Okay, so I like bragging about my little corner of the world. *G*

Anyway, if you have questions about Niagara, or just want some information on stuff like reasonably priced restaurants (those in the tourist area can be absolutely ridiculously priced), feel free to email me at [email protected]

I do hope you enjoy your trip.

take care
MzRoze

Me again. [:D]

I didn't see this before I replied to your last post. I have never heard of anything like that, and with the number of American tourists I talk to every day, I am pretty sure I would have.

Thank you for all the wonderful advice, I am sure that we will use it. I am very excited and looking forward to it. Now we just have to hope that he can get a day or two off work......

brightspot -> RE: Niagara Falls (4/30/2005 9:02:01 PM)

I have heard that is is now harder to get
back in the states once you cross over.

We've only had our vehicle searched once going in and have never had any trouble any of the other times we've crossed or coming back. Just make sure you have your drivers license and birth certificate with you, although generally they only ask for birth certificates for any unmentionables that may be along. They will also ask you why you are going into Canada and how long you will be staying. On the way back, they will ask you where you live, etc.

If you want to visit a store that makes the most incredible leather wear...go a bit further into Toronto and visit Northbound Leather. Its well worth the trip :)

Hope you enjoy your vacation! We've lived about an hour...hour and a half from Niagara Falls for seven years and have yet to visit Niagara Falls. (We *have* visited Northbound Leather a few times though <grin>)

best regards,
fate

Something that comes to mind in that neck of the world is the CN Tower in Toronto. Here's a link to the website. Remember that ticket prices are in Canadian $$.

MHOO314 -> RE: Niagara Falls (5/1/2005 4:04:50 AM)

I LOVE Niagra Falls, great fun, even if you just stand there and look at it non stop, is amazing--( on the Canadian side of course)-- Madame Tussauds has one of her wax museums there and be sure to take the drive along the river road, also the park with Brock's monument----the gardens there are lovely for strolling! Have fun...

darkinshadows -> RE: Niagara Falls (5/1/2005 2:37:59 PM)

oh siamsa,

Have the most fantastic time - and I want to see photos!

Love and Blessings

siamsa24 -> RE: Niagara Falls (5/2/2005 7:34:48 AM)

Thank you everyone, we have cut the trip down to only one night (he couldn't get off work [:(] ) but I think we will have a blast.

And don't worry Angel, there will be pictures [:D]

Ok, another question. We aren't sure exactly how long we will be staying. We may stay until Monday, although we may not. What should we say?

MzRoze -> RE: Niagara Falls (5/4/2005 7:06:13 PM)

You just tell them that you are on vacation and will be staying for a few days. If they ask for a specific date that you will be leaving Canada, you can tell them you aren't sure, but that you won't be staying longer than Monday.

Lots of people will show up on spur of the moment kind of trips like that.
The customs people are used to it.

I hope you have lots of fun!!

siamsa24 -> RE: Niagara Falls (5/4/2005 7:09:30 PM)

Thanks, I'm just rather high-strung and paranoid, I tend to over analyze and think about things too much. I was just afraid that you couldn't not know when you were going to leave. Oi, I need to go take a chill pill or something [;)]

siamsa24 -> RE: Niagara Falls (5/10/2005 7:13:18 AM)

We're back! And, as promised, here are the pictures: Niagara Falls Pictures

stormsfate -> RE: Niagara Falls (5/10/2005 7:32:21 AM)

Awww, looks like you guys had a great time! Just one question....does the kitty cat reside at Niagara Falls...lol?

Hope this means you are feeling better!

best regards,
fate

P.S. Did you win anything????

siamsa24 -> RE: Niagara Falls (5/10/2005 7:34:55 AM)

Hehe, no the kitty cat is my dear little Princess Mononoke, she lives with my mom. Her pictures just happened to be on the same memory card.

Nope, didn't win a single thing, he won $25, which I quickly lost. Either way it was fun [:D]

SweetDommes -> RE: Niagara Falls (5/10/2005 10:16:21 AM)

Welcome home, and glad you had fun [:)] I missed chatting with ya though. You've missed all kinds of shit LOL
