"FEMA wants students to give money back"

By David Goldstein
McClatchy Newspapers

" WASHINGTON - When Hurricane Katrina walloped the Gulf Coast nearly two years ago, Nora Watts fled New Orleans for higher ground like everyone else.

Like almost 2 million other evacuees, the Dillard University junior applied for disaster aid. She received two checks totaling $2,358, which she used to buy clothes and pay rent on an apartment.

Now the government wants its money back.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency began sending letters last summer to students who received aid, claiming they were ineligible and threatening prosecution and financial penalties if the money wasn't returned. "

And if elected Senator Abba Dabba from Illinois would "double foreign aid to $50B."
Plenty of money for "foreign aid" but not for students.

The Feds should go after that money. She was not entitled to it. Why should I and other tax payers have to buy her clothes?? My taxes are high enough already..

LMAO.  yeah= they did not know about Katrina.  what a national embarrassment.

im still angry over katrina.  not in regards that the govt would not help- but that it BLOCKED help!!!   many credable sources were turned back- not allowed to send in help.

we teh ppl seen the cry for help- much of the world sent or attempted to send aid. when a semi full of bottled water from Walmart was refused you KNOW someone blunderred!!!

whoever gave the orders to obstruct help- should live on a freeway for 6 days and nights. i never thought this could happen in America.

i was certain aid would come- even from a compassionate administration.

who will it be next time? all this boogieman stuff over a possible terrorist- well weather catastrophies have been with us since the beginning of time- but "we did not know" blow me!!!

we didnt fricken "know"!!!

Drop in the bucket, popeye, compared to what we are spending to kill Iraqis.

fastreply.

they don't aid college students on the basis that college dorms and apts aren't our permanent residences? that's such a bullshit premise. i live here year round; i don't have family i can stay with, really, ever, except for an aunt maybe, and i don't have a "home" to go to - this IS my home. it IS my permanent residence. it also happens to be an apartment that's practically on campus and only leases to students. the idea that all students must have mommy and daddy to go back to, and that it's right to deny people aid on the basis of what part of the population does, upsets me. what about people for whom that university WAS their home? if a terrible storm hit the area where i live (which is entirely possible, considering i live in florida and it happens here often), i would be livid if i were denied aid on the basis of the fact that most of my friends have parents and a house somewhere else.

Nosathro -> RE: "FEMA wants students to give money back" (4/26/2007 8:55:30 PM)

From articles I have read in the newspapers about how poorly FEMA handle everything wasting Millions of taxpayer dollars.   The sweet deals the gave Companies, that go into the Millions of taxpayer dollars, who never did what they were paid to do.  And all the graft and corpution.  It seems funny they go after someone for only 2 grand.

Be Well

greetings,

i agree with nosathro. i also believe THEY were the ones who messed up - so they don't have a right to go about trying to rectify it by all of a sudden changing their tune from disaster relief money to temporary loan. if they really wanted to save face, they'd do a lot better by just thinking about this stuff BEFORE and DURING major disasters, rather than years afterwards.

FEMA was turned from something Reagan quipped could fuck up a 2 car parade into a world-class organization that effectively did its job flawlessly by Clinton.

Reagan blamed the Democrats.

AnencephalyBoy turned it back into the national embarassment it was under Reagan.

Odds are fairly good he will try to blame the Democrats as well.

General reply -

I wonder how much the cost will be to try and collect these funds?
And getting aid to the students who lost their food, clothing and shelter makes sense.

Thousands of students had to relocate to different campuses and start over.

To be honest with you, it's worse than that.  It's not just students who resided in dorms and had permanent addresses outside of the region that were effected by this policy.  Several very close and personal friends of mine who lived in the married housing at UNO were denied any and all assistance by FEMA by virtue of the fact that it was not a "permanent residence."  These people lived in New Orleans their entire lives and were completely, royally screwed because even the married housing wasn't considered a premanent residence.

They even battled with a few of them for several months before agreeing to give them trailers.  Providing them with a place to live was too much to ask from FEMA.  I got to play refugee center up until this past winter for less fortunate friends.  Funny thing is, if you were taken in by a good samaritan?  That also screws you out of about 90% of what you're elligible to receive from FEMA.  My friend that I thought I was helping was effectively left high and dry because I opened my door to him ... he'd have been better off (literally) if he'd gone to a shelter instead.

Sinergy, FEMA is a textbook case of what happens when the government assembles a giant beauracracy of desk cowboys.
I mean what good are a bunch of people with college degrees sitting at desks going to do in an emergency situation like Katrina? Write memos faster?
I seriously doubt they'd be willing to roll up their sleeves and get dirty.
And we see this everywhere in govt now.
These are, basically secretarial jobs that don't "require" a degree to do. "Paper pushing" jobs.
