ORIGINAL: Saratov There has to be something wrong with the system when more than 50% of high school grads who go on to college end up w/ 66-75% of their classes being remedial so that they can 'catch up' to collegiate level work. Let's require 'em to learn it or not pass/graduate. College probably costs parents more per semester than the semesters leading to it, remedial classes don't count toward required credits.... longer time required to graduate. Yep, there is something wrong with the system. In fact, there are many things wrong with our educational system. But thank goodness, at least for me, that there is more than one way to skin a cat...What I mean is, thank G-d there is such a thing as remediation on the college level. I was one of those people who was not able to complete high school...not because I was academically inferior...in fact, my educational performance up until high school had been exemplary...honors all the way. High school, unfortunately, was a horribly turbulent time for me, which had I not had the option of sitting for a GED, I would not have made it out alive - and I do mean that literally. If I had been made to remain in high school until I passed with no other options, I would not have finished at all. I would've dropped out and stayed out. I would not have gone onto college, nor graduate school. So, I'm only suggesting that when you think about that over 50%, try to open your minds as to who might make up that over 50%...It might just be that fantastic doctor or nurse who just saved your life. Or that incredible social worker who just got you through one of the most difficult times of your life. Don't just assume that it's some person who is lazy academically and looking for an easy way out. MNN
