Math 1950-2007

Last week I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter
girl took my $2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents
from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel
and 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her register. I sensed her
discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters,  but she
hailed the manager for help. While he tried to explain the transaction
to her, she stood there and cried.

Why do I tell you this?

-------------------------------------------

Because of the evolution in teaching math since the 1950s:
-------------------------------------------
1. Teaching Math In 1950

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is

4/5 of the price. /What is his profit?/

-------------------------------------------
2. Teaching Math In 1960

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is

4/5 of the price, or $80. /What is his profit?/

------------------------------------------
3. Teaching Math In 1970

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is

$80. /Did he make a profit? /

------------------------------------------
4. Teaching Math In 1980

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is

$80 and his profit is $20. Your assignment: /Underline the number 20./

-------------------------------------------
5. Teaching Math In 1990

A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and
inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the
preservation of our woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit
of$20. /What do you think of this way of making a living?/ Topic for
class participation after answering the question:  How did the birds and
squirrels feel as the logger cut down their homes? ( *There are no wrong
answers*.)

------------------------------------------
6. Teaching Math In 2007

Un hachero vende una carretada de madera para $100. El costo de la
producciones es $80. Cuanto dinero ha hecho

Sad but true [:(]

Well, truly sad story...both that the girl couldn't make your change and that you spent 1.58 for a burger at Burger King (don't they have a dollar menu?). But I'm gonna go ahead and assume that you're not at all meaning to suggest that either the environmentalist movement or Latino immigrants are responsible for the devolution of mathematics education in this country...

La ganancia fue veinte dolares. i'm not from here but did go to the public school system. i know more american history than the americans i know.i speak better english than 90% of the americans i know.
but good joke.

As a former  community college teacher (sciences) I have to say I was laughing at the joke but you know what .it isn't funny because it is close to the truth!
I was not born in the US. I emigrated there and  20 yrs  later,  one of the reasons  I am  back home is that they wouldn't  let me teach but they did want me to pass everyone.....

Knew the answer to the math problem from the 1950's, do I get a prize???? LOL just kidding, funny joke though. Sad but funny.

Sorry. I don't see the fun of it. I find it more sad that you imply persons that use another language are less than you. oh and by the way... the translation is wrong. the spanish word for logger is "maderero" not "hachero" you can check at google if you wish.

he wasn't implying  anything with the spanish...execpt that now some schools have both english and spanish classes for the same subjects.....is american/US history taught in english and spanish in a US school.

Not at the small, rural public school my kids attend. Well, two of them still do. The eldest has moved on to a top engineering school, on a scholarship.

The choices arrayed before you would seem to include:

getting elected to the local school board and making some changes

and

whining some more.

You leapt pretty far from your tiny little patch of anecdotal evidence, AM. Maybe someone should do a thread on the history of Critical Thinking.

AquarianMale53 -> RE: Math History.... (4/26/2007 7:06:03 PM)

Geez people, lighten up. I reposted something a friend sent me cause I got a chuckle out of it and thought I would share. Do people really have to analyze everything these days? Maybe we should pray for the 50s or 60s to return when people treated each other a bit better..... and took humor for what it is......shakes head.

You make politically charged jokes, we lynch you.  Seem fair?

Well, it is.

mastercreeker -> RE: Math History.... (4/27/2007 12:58:35 PM)

Put me down as agreeing with AM, politically charged humor has been around since at least the Civil War (google Thomas Nast sometime) and I don't recall any lynchings. Besides, imho, this PC stuff is wayyyyyyyyy outta hand. Of course, we could make it punishable by flogging (mentally pictures eager submissives merrily typing away.)

Saratov -> RE: Math History.... (4/27/2007 7:11:09 PM)

There has to be something wrong with the system when more than 50% of high school grads who go on to college end up w/ 66-75% of their classes being remedial so that they can 'catch up' to collegiate level work.
Let's require 'em to learn it or not pass/graduate.  College probably costs parents more per semester than the semesters leading to it, remedial classes don't count toward required credits.... longer time required to graduate.

And please, let's not assume that I got "all bent out of shape..." I got a little giggle from the joke, and the OP probably did not intend any insult...but still there are still too many others out there who, if they could articulate them selves as well as the OP, WOULD mean it as an insult.

Yep, there is something wrong with the system. In fact, there are many things wrong with our educational system. But thank goodness, at least for me, that there is more than one way to skin a cat...What I mean is, thank G-d there is such a thing as remediation on the college level. I was one of those people who was not able to complete high school...not because I was academically inferior...in fact, my educational performance up until high school had been exemplary...honors all the way. High school, unfortunately, was a horribly turbulent time for me, which had I not had the option of sitting for a GED, I would not have made it out alive - and I do mean that literally. If I had been made to remain in high school until I passed with no other options, I would not have finished at all. I would've dropped out and stayed out. I would not have gone onto college, nor graduate school.

So, I'm only suggesting that when you think about that over 50%, try to open your minds as to who might make up that over 50%...It might just be that fantastic doctor or nurse who just saved your life. Or that incredible social worker who just got you through one of the most difficult times of your life. Don't just assume that it's some person who is lazy academically and looking for an easy way out.

Saratov -> RE: Math History.... (4/28/2007 12:46:12 PM)

was refering to the quality of the system that passes students who don't meet the standards, lowers standards so that more will be able to pass and fails to adequatly prepare kids for higher education.

WilliamWizer -> RE: Math History.... (4/28/2007 1:37:14 PM)

I didn't meet the standards. I don't meet the standards and I coundn't care less about the standards but at my job I have done things that nobody else was able to do. even people that meet that dammed fucking standards.
could you tell me why I need to know how to draw to become a good software developer? or why I need to know how to make poems to be a surgeon? or why do I need to know how to swim to be a top ten violinist?
