Is this a common practice?

I don't know how common it is, but at this point, if I ever get married, he'll be taking my name.  I'm not messing with all the paperwork involved in changing the title of the house, the mortgage, my license, etc into a new name.

A number of men take the surnames of their wives when they marry, or both partners change their names to a hyphenated one. This isn't the case for most men, but it's hardly extraordinary, and it's not merely a BDSM practice.

For vanilla purposes, and as a sign that We are in permanent bondship of the soul, Mistress took my last name. As a sign of covenant with Her, and not having a middle name, I took one of the masculine forms of Her first name as my middle one.

Not a comment in particular on this thread but on the idea that a woman would take a man's surname at all.

I have never understood it.

Now some folks will say "So she'll have the last name as their offspring" but that shows another level of confusion for me.

Why on earth would the sire's surname go to the offspring? Unless you do a blood or genetic test you cannot know the father for certain. Unless there has been serious medical intervention you know know who the mother is.

Not that we are planning on having them, but if we did have offspring I have always said "it comes out of my body, it has my name; when you can put as much time and physical effort into the process, we can hyphenate."

But that's exactly why patriarchal naming rights exist ... to try to "stamp" the child as theirs by its name, to try to lay to rest any doubts as to who sired it. Quite futile really since research indicates that around 10% of offspring don't have the genes of the supposed father! As you so rightly point out, there is far less doubt as to the mother (although in these days of donor eggs and surrogacy ...!). But I do like your ideas there TammyJo ... not that I'll ever have to worry about it since I'm well past the age of UMs!

We strongly considered this when we got married. The reality of it came down to he works and I do not. There would have been a lot more fuss with changing his name than to changing mine. I also considered each keeping our own name, but the romantic in me wanted us to be linked via name.
