In a democracy, the ultimate responsibility for a nation's actions rests with its citizens. The top rung of government -- the entity with the ultimate power of governance -- is the asserted will of the people. Therefore, in any democracy, it is essential that its citizens be fully and accurately informed.

In the United States, currently the most powerful nation on earth, it is even more essential that its citizens

Its only true in a direct democracy that power lies with citizens, in representative democracy (as practiced in the USA) power lies with the law makers.

Its a popular misconception, and one which holds people back from understanding how politics works.

As for the video... meh.

we are a republic not a democracy

A true direct democracy is far from ideal.

The idea of a republic, in which we are supposed to live, is to elect leaders who act as servants, putting our best interests forward first, but applying their own knowledge and wisdom to accomplish the best future for their constituents and the progeny thereof.

Case in point : A direct democracy becomes mobocracy. For example the people could vote to force you to paint your house pink. In a republic, true leaders are supposed to keep this from happening.

The problem is the average person will place their own ideals above the Constitution, just as our elected officials do now.

One of the reasons a republic works better (wish we had one) is that the common Man has too much to deal with. Earning a living and raising children is a full time job. The idea in a republic is to elect (read hire) people who's job it will be to keep an eye on political issues.

It is the idead system if you can find the right people for the job.

No democracy has ever really worked, and the Founding Fathers knew that. Now that their ideal has been bastardised, we shall surely fall, just as the Roman empire did.

The fate of Mankind in large societies seems to be to devolve. Our system of government is largely modeled after Rome, and they devolved. How can we expect better ? I surely believe that Bush would take up playing the fiddle if the entire country was on fire. The democrats might choose the saxophone however, which is largely a moot point. The Whigs and the Tories are mostly cut of the same cloth.

My opinions may be radical, but they are rooted in fact.
