Status: offline 		I just found the grossest thing. There was a COCKROACH in my room! I hate, hate, hate, hate living in a dormitory and this just ruined my year. It was big and it was yucky and I trapped it in the top of a CD spindle and then one of the football boys squashed it for me and then is was all squashed and yucky (for all of you that wondered how I actually talk, that sentence is it). But it was still there. Does anyone know how to get rid of them? I only have to live here for another two weeks, but the idea of sharing my living space with roaches makes my skin crawl.

Status: offline 		Roach motels if you only have a few.

Bug spray if you have quite a few.

Boric acid (plus bug spray) if you have an infestation.

Edit:

A cat will probably eat the roaches if you only have a few, but don't spray if you have a cat

Status: offline 		I don't know how many there are, I only saw one but my building is HUGE (over 300 people live here) so there could be thousands. I just want to keep them out of my room.

I just found out that my partner SAW a roach this weekend, but didn't say anything because he didn't want to freak me out. Grrrrrr, just tell me, they could have been crawling all over me last night! Gross!

Status: offline 		I would go with the roach motels unless you find egg cases around.

Just make sure that you close your food containers tightly, that you wash your dishes right away, and if you have pet... make sure you don't leave food in its bowl.

And make sure you wipe up any crumbs - if you have a toaster, shake it out.

Status: offline 		I just keep having flashbacks of the house that I worked on in West Virginia where the drop ceilings collapsed and covered us with roach larvae. We have the same type of ceilings here, it's just eeking me out, I feel like my skin is crawling.

No pets, they won't allow it (maybe if I had my little kitty she would take care of the roaches) and the only food I have is in my refrigerator.

Status: offline 		depending on the size of your dorm, you may be able to simply go with using a fogger or more commonly known as a bug bomb. Hot Shot is a very good, low-priced bug bomb and you can pick up a pack of 3 of them for about $7-$9. Open your drawers and cabinets, but turn glasses upside down and cover eating utensils. Set one off in the middle of the room and leave for a couple of hrs. Come back, get some venilation in the room (open the windows) and stay out of there for a couple of hours. When you get back, any bugs there will have gone back outside or next door or be dead.

If you have a 3-pack, and you have 2 weeks left, you can use one per week and still have 1 can left over

Status: offline 		Hey another person with the gross dorm experince. We had the rodent problem here. Or at least my old dorm. I got a big lovely care package from home about halfway through second semester freshman year (cookies, ritzes, and all sorts of good things). I placed the box (yes, it was big enough for a legimately sized box) on the floor without thinking anymore on that topic. The next morning when I scrambled out of bed at 0430 for the joy and happiness of NROTC, and there's a friggen mouse just sitting on top of the box. I look inside and the compressed furball of pure evil had rather than simply attack one food item, but had proceeded to violate every dang roll of crackers I had. Just a little bite here, another bite there. The only thing that defeated the devil rodent from getting to my mother's lovely cookies was a healthy layer of ziplock bags.

Anyways, bugs are nasty though. I kinda got over those on my random mission trips to Mexico (centipedes suck). Still my condolances about the cockroaches.

Couldn't you complain to the RA/maintence staff though?

Status: offline 		I can handle the mice that we have (the building is over 100 years old, there are bound to be pest problems).

I talked to my RA (resident assistant) and she called the people that are supposed to take care of it. They said that it's almost the end of the year and that I need to wait it out. That's the worst advice ever, would any of you want to wait it out? Yuck

Status: offline 		*shrug* Anyone who thinks they DONT have roaches somewhere in their living space is fooling themselves.

You're in a dorm, even if YOU do everything you can to get rid of them, people with food all over and simply the dorm itself will still have them.

Use some combat sticky things to keep it down and realize if that's the worst problem you've got, you're doing well.

That is a pretty nasty experience with the ceilings, and my sister still shrieks and panics at even the sight of a spider, but just accept that roaches are far more resilient and physically evolved to survive than we are.

ants, roaches, mice...there is no "getting rid of them", only pushing them out of the space you have carved out for yourself by setting up and maintaining your perimeter. then you can pretend that they don't live in or near the same space that you do.

roaches: there used to be a gel that you could lay down along the perimeter and they would either not cross it or die trying...not sure if it is still available, but it worked for this slave while living on the bottom floor of a 100 year old house with upstairs Hare Krishna neighbors who refused to join in the fight, as they felt they had just as much right to live as we do.....

ants: the traps have worked for this slave sometimes, but if their main nest is anywhere close, they are persistent and eventually ignore the traps--boric acid(powder) layed down where they are entering, or again, all along your perimeter seems to work best.

mice: perhaps you could borrow a cat or terrier-type dog, especially a miniature schnauzer. they should be able to rid you of any infestation problems within your perimeter over a relatively small period of time. it is suprising the small cracks mice can fit themselves through, and they probably don't allow pets at the dorm, but that would be this slave's recommendation other than the old fashioned spring loaded traps!

I honestly do NOT wish to freak you out here, ok... but it's a good idea to keep your purse in the fridge when ever you are at home... yes, they will get in there and you will take some with you where ever you go. They are attracted to the glue on contact paper, paper bags, boxes, envelopes and books... among so many other things... sorry, I really am... if you saw one that means you have a serious pest problem. They only come out of the walls to bring back food for the colony. They are also attracted to any heat source... yes.. that means electronic equipment. My advice would be to gather all of your stuff together and set off a bug bomb in your room asap, then again before you leave. The insecticide only kills the living bugs and has no effect on the eggs, bombing a second time two weeks later will catch the newly hatched ones. When you set off the bug bomb be sure that all of your closet doors and all of your drawers are open and windows are closed. I would consider keeping a towel or something like that under any electronic equipment and spray it with a good insect killer every week to deter any insects from getting inside the cases. Spraying on hard surfaces is useless because it disipates quickly.

And ants will not cross a chalk line... ever.

And a pet snake is more effective against mice, the scent of the snake will run them off.

If you are wondering... I have a morbid fear of insects so it was always in my best interest to know the best ways to keep them away.

Again, I'm sorry, I know how you feel, I really do....

Status: offline 		Blech. I managed to weasle my way into the one dorm they keep really nice on my campus, perhaps my standards are too high (the mouse was in my old almost 95 year old dorm). If they're not going to do anything you may have to stick it out, but you are almost home free after all. Still, most of these people seem to have some lovely advice for you.

I'm just looking forward to life post dorms though.
