I'm getting a bit fed up with being just about the only Brit on the boards that doesnt flamegrill the US over something or other - be it gun laws, foreign policy, US society at large or whatever else. Dont get me wrong, I dont particularly agree with everything or understand everything posted here from US members either. But I find myself less and less agreeing with or understanding much that is posted here from the UK or Europe - but then I'm likely the perpetual outsider. Should I move to the US? If so, where in the US? - taking into account that I cant take the cold or the sun, dont like big cities or small towns, dont fancy witnessing tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes or floods, and would be bored silly with endless prairies! E

If you are looking for the perfect place, i am not sure there is one that doesn't have at least one of the things you mentioned. Good luck in whatever you choose.

there's always Chicago, IL. we have a British consulate here located on north Michigan Ave and plenty of pubs on the northside to remain you of home ...shopping ...public transportation ...plus we're trying to bring the Olympics here for 2016!

E Sounds like you might like the Pacific Northwest (Washington, Oregon, northern CA)... temperatures are a bit more moderate than other parts of the U.S., although some areas get a LOT of rain, and there's quite a bit of geographical diversity. The only problem is lots of Californians moving up there trying to turn all the little rural havens into European-style socialist states [8D] ...dave

Second the idea of the Pacific Northwest. Along that coast the weather is pretty close to England. Rarely snows, never gets really cold or really hot, winters tend to be rainy and gray. They have big storms sometimes, but no tornadoes and nothing like a Florida-style hurricane season. You could find towns of all sizes, from Seattle and Portland on down. If you want medium, try Bellingham WA, near the Canadian border, or Vancouver WA, just across the river from Portland. Both have active BDSM groups, and are small cities, not small towns. Both are close to larger cites with lots of attractions.

I have a better idea Lady E - try Canada instead. We more polite, have a better tax system, universal health care, not to mention that we aren't the 51st state as some Americans believe.

Go to Canada LadyEllen, you do not want to come to the US. Some of us would welcome you with open arms. However the US generally speaking is not liberal as far as anyone who isn't white/straight/christian is concerned. I am seriously considering of moving to Canada myself, I am really getting tired of the BS that goes on here in the states. ~Lashra

Oh yeah, Vancover Island is just amazing in so many ways. I have a very special friend that lives there and I am still amazed at how liberal thinking and accepting, people are there. If I had lots of $$ or didn't have so many ties to Iowa I would move there in a heartbeat.

Thanks all. Lots of ideas there! Thinking about it, I always liked the idea of N California/Oregon/Washington, but also the Carolinas for the history and all that - the hurricanes would put me off. Hawaii was a bit of a surprise, but that could have its charm, though with apologies, its not really the US in my mind LOL! Canada would be great (my grandma was from there) but I fear much too cold in the winter for me! E

Thanks Goodlittlegirl - it was all going well, until it asked for my email and details at the end; I'm on enough junk mailing lists so I dont do that anymore! Interestingly, though, it did come up with previewed likely spots whilst the questionnaire was underway - one of which was in North Carolina.... E
