I must agree, manners and courtesy are very important, and just be yourself. If you are looking to find that special someone, they will meet you sooner or later, best start out on the right foot. You will not be able to hide who you are for long.

Be well, be safe.

Emails telling me to "Get on your knees, and call me, bitch" tells me that the the person has no interest in getting to know me at all.

:::laughing:: my first response when reading this was to write back "Ok, bitch. Take a midol, it's sound like you are major PMS'ing...."

Voltare -> RE: first approch online (6/20/2004 12:52:45 PM)

My theory, is if a sub/slave would need or respond well to an aggressive, harsh, "get on your knees now bitch" style of writing, making demands and the like... then she responds to just about any Top doing the same thing. That's great for a casual player, I suppose - but that certainly isn't what I seek.

rain hit it right on - be polite, direct, and brief in the first email. I usually just say "Hi, I liked your profile because (xyz) and it made me think about (xyz). If you want to talk more, please look my profile over and drop me a line here or on (xyz) messager." It takes about twenty seconds to read, and if she's interested she'll contact me.... if not, then neither of us have wasted a lot of time. If she doesn't write me back because I wasn't assholish enough, then odds are I won't be assholish enough for her in real time either (grin.)

There's someone for everyone in this world. If your approach is brusque, and that is your way, then someone will appreciate it. If you approach is gentle and straightforward, there are others who will find you charming. There are a number of opportunities, but finding a Match for who you are might take some exploration. Don't take it personally, after all, Do you melt for everyone who ever approached you?

Sinergy -> RE: first approch online (6/29/2004 11:32:29 AM)

Interesting.

The comment "Get on your knees and call me bitch" makes me think of the Aikido position of seiza. An Aikidoka is on their knees in the mediation position, and all techniques found in aikido actually work more effectively from this position as one's center of gravity is much lower than the other person's.

Sure, I will get on my knees. Hope you dont mind being flipped on the floor, pinned, and...

In Aikido, the one on their knees is in the Dominant position...

M. Sinergy-

Isn't kokyo dousu <sp?> the sexiest thing? you know, the sitting/ extension throw pin technique?

I used to to it with a particular uke, and always though she was enjoying it a little too much for the mats<g>.

Hello Topcat,

I did a couple of years of Aikido, and while I remember seeing the technique you are talking about (would be Kukyu (4th technique) something) Im not sure I could actually pull it off or give a description of what it is.

My base martial art is Hapkido (Korean jiu jutsu) which I have a 3rd degree black belt in.

Then there are a bunch of other weird things like Teeol Moon Kung Fu, Shotokan Karate, Arnis, etc., in the mix.

M. Sinergy-

I did Shotokan too, for many years- my biggest problem with Aikido is that many are taking it because the tai chi classes meet to early<g>. they are a bit, well, let's just say they wear alot of tyedie. Several times, I have heard of Nages I worked with complaining that 'he looks like he's really going to hit me!!'

Hapkido I know from the recieving end- I did some training manuvers with the ROK Marines, and that was their prefered style. Very, very tough to counter.

Stay warm,
Lawrence

So Lawrence,

Are you still active with Aikido or is this part of your past?

Those skills work well for take down scenes, you know?

Sinergy,

Emoticons don't copy in quotes for some reason unless you add them manually. It was a joke. (Hence the smiley in the original post.)

topcat -> RE: first approch online (7/3/2004 6:10:55 AM)

My dear Bailey-

I haven't trained in about three years now- I am looking forward to getting back to it sometime soon. Aikido _is_ great for take downs, but it does require a certain level of 'uke' ability on the part of well, the Uke (in a technique 'Nage' does the throwing, 'Uke' does the falling down). A lot of Aikido can _really_ hurt if something goes wrong.

Stay Warm,
Lawrence

my biggest problem with Aikido

My problem with Aikidoists (love the art) is found in the following example. They do front chops with a big sword arm chop coming down from above. All their defense against front chops rely on this sort of strike. Hapkido starts with a rotational motion behind the ear and actually strikes forward at (for example) the collar bone and strikes it with the heel of the hand.

Aikidoka could not counter my front strike. Rather than modify their technique to find a way to have it work against my strike, they criticized my strike and told me I was doing it wrong because their stuff didnt work against it.

Seemed backwards to me, but I didnt say anything since I knew I could be wrong.

Which isnt to say I changed my technique...

Sinergy

p.s. On a side note, I got so sick of their trashing other martial arts that I wrote up an article about an aspect of their art (also found in Hapkido) and published it in Aikido Today. I gave one of my free copies to the studio I studied at.

p.s.s Did I mention I am something of a complete smartass?

I had started taking classes just for this reason right before my recent foot surgery. I need to make it a point to go back as soon as I'm able.

Not only do I want to "fall well", but I want to give my partner a run for his money... because if he gets me down, I want him to feel like he's worked hard enough to earn the right to indulge as the victor.

p.s. MistressDread, I recommend you quit reading this thread... I'm hoping it doesn't stop ;-)

Sinergy -> RE: first approch online (7/3/2004 1:57:54 PM)

Hello,

When I was actively involved in my primary martial art and in Aikido, I was frequently asked to be the test dummy / uke for people since I have been thrown by thousands of people in my day (some who had actual skill at it) and generally spent a lot of time working with them to actually add some theatrics to it.

For example, a person does a knife defense which involves a shoulder throw. The standard finish is something stupid like a punch to the solar plexus.

Stupid standard Hapkido finish, I would convince the person to do a full ground pin and then a dropping elbow onto my head. We would practice it until it looked both natural and my partner was able to make it look like I was being seriously damaged without actually damaging me. When they did this, I would flollop and willomie (like a mattress from Squarnshallous Zeta) about like I was taking actual damage.

Aikido we didnt do those, preferring the soft style of pinning the person.

The problem I generally had was finding a partner willing to let me beat the living bejeezus out of them for my tests, but I was quite popular among people testing...

This is why I always recommended that my students go and practice with as many people as they could find. Everybody does things slightly different, and practicing with hundreds of people teaches you how to take the blow / pin / etc., without taking serious injury.

I cant tell you how many students he had who would lord it over people 2 belts below them at their ability to be thrown, or indicate it could not possibly work, and then whine about being hurt when I flipped them on their head in sparring.

*gazes innocently at them and reiterates they should be thrown more*

News to me that my first approaches are kind of frowned on. Quite the opposite actually. The problem I have is I seldom make first approaches.
