I'm going to visit Austin Texas this month, sort of a preview because I do intend to move there. Can any of you Austinites.. Austinions recommend both good/cheap downtown eating places, and suggestions for areas in which I should house browse? Do you know a great realtor? I'm looking for a house under $175,000, obviously I am not buying immediately but I want to get a 'feel' for what is available etc. I will be there less than a week so I am trying to line stuff up ahead of time. Thanks!!

Food: Most places have entrees under $10. TexMex: Chuy's off Barton Springs. Late Night: Starseeds (East side of I35 at 31st St) In downtown: a few places on Red River and 8th street (Stubb's BBQ, and Jaimes Villa) Lots of places on Congress and Lamar, especially south of the river. Near 45th and Duval: Hyde Park Grill (excellent fries), Mothers (good vegetarian place), Ararat (middle eastern). You can find homes in your price range in most areas in Austin. What might be the deciding factor for you is where you intend to work and how you feel about commuting. I live in one of the suburbs and used to work in the University of Texas campus area. If I needed to be to work by 8 AM I had a hour or more commute. Fortunately I now have a job literally 1 mile from my home lol. We have recently added some toll roads to the northern part of the county and they help a great deal with getting into and out of Austin but have no effect about moving around once inside the city limits. There is a pretty lively local kink community, lots of things to do for fun and lots of good eating. Some more Austinatious-style eateries downtown are Katz's deli, Hut's Hamburgers, Texas Chili Parlor. Not quite downtown but still worth a trip is Catfish Parlor on 183. As a native born Austinite (we are rare birds too) I welcome you to the Heart of Texas and hope you find it to your liking. I have always gravitated back to my birthplace no matter how far my wanderings have taken me. I love this town.....especially in the spring when the bluebonnets are blooming and things are so green and fresh.

DommeChains that is part of why I need to preview the city lol. I do not want to be in an outlying area, I need to be close to public transportation and be within walking distance to markets etc. (Especially with gasoline zoooooming up in price like it is heh). Now granted I am getting my info from online... but Hyde Park 'looks' like the sort of place I would like. Thanks for the suggestions!! Elorin [:D] yuppers I intend to become involved. I do I do I do! Egads, this is such a giant step for me. I currently live in a very rural area, heck I walk around outside naked & don't even own a house key. Thanks for the support. Yay. Now I just need to get my house sold. Drat this housing market eh?

Hyde Park is a really cool area.....but be aware it is also a very pricey area because of the proximity to the core of Austin. Best bet is to find a good agent and let them do the leg work for you. There are several other little pocket neighborhoods where you can get public transportation and some access to markets, etc. I will be brutally honest with you though. Austin is very much a Texan city and we are not well served by public transportation. Texans are kinda big on driving lol. In any case have a wonderful visit and be patient in locating your dream home. On the plus side if you want to consider a condo you will find many more choices open to the lifestyle approach you are wanting......walking distance, public transportation. There have been many condos made available in the last few years close and/or in the core of Austin. And, no I am not in real estate nor married to an agent. I just spent about 5 months last year finding us a new home & selling our old home so I am pretty familiar with what the general market is like around here.

cjenny Austin is an awesome place and I'm positive you will enjoy it. You might look at places that advertise as student housing. Some apartment complexes try to advertise to the college student but are open to anyone. Most would be close to public transportation. Drop a note if you'd like to get together for coffee during your visit!! ~Elorin
