regardless, my vote is for Obama.  i enjoy his intelligence, candor and viewpoints.

I've listened to a couple of Obama's speeches, and I do think he has intelligence and candor, and he has a high "likability" factor for me.  For what little I do know about some of his views tends to make me regret he would undoubtedly be effective in getting them implemented, therefore I'm unlikely to vote for him.

Basically, for me, one of the biggest issues is the "war on terror", and where a candidate stands on it.  A second important consideration is the likelihood of what kind of judge they would nominate for Supreme Court vacancies.  Third is their other policies.

This wipes out the Dems - in general - for a preferred Presidential candidate for me. But not totally.  I think an activist, principled conservative Congress would dilute most of the worst excesses of general policies of a Dem candidate, so I end up with the following possibilities:

1.  Barack Obama (D) - Negative on war, negative on nominations, negative on general policy, high on likability.  Not likely to vote for him, but wish I could.

2.  Hillary Clinton (D) - Positive on war, negative on nominations, negative on general policy, negative on likability.  Possible I'll vote for her, and will if I have to, just don't wanna.

3.  Rudolph Giuliani (R) - positive on war, negative on nominations, negative on general policy, positive on likability.  Possible I'll vote for him.

4.  Al Gore (D) - Negative on war, negative on nominations, negative on general policy, negative on likability.  Very unlikely I'd vote for him unless hell freezes over, or the sea level rises 20 feet.

5.  Fred Thompson (R) - positive on war, positive on nominations, positive on general policy, positive on likability.  Very likely I'd vote for him.

6. John McCain (R) - Low on trust. No way in hell I'd vote for him.

7. Mitt Romney (R) - Not enough information yet.

8.  Newt Gingrich (R) - Positive on war, positive on nominations, positive on general policy, middle on likeability.  A controversial figure, not likely to get elected.

9.  Bill Richardson (D) - Negative on war, negative on nominations, negative on general policy, Middle on likability.  Might vote for him, under the right circumstances. I generally think he's willing to go against the grain under the right circumstances, and he has some foreign policy experience, which makes his current "anti-war plan" particularly galling to me.

10. General Dem field: Edwards, Biden, Dodd, Gravel, Kucinich - Not serious candidates.

11. General Repub field: Cox, Gilmore, Hagel, Huckabee, Hunter, Paul, Tancredo - Not serious candidates.

12. Stand out Repubs: Brownback, Tommy Thompson - Maybe.  Not enough info, but generally positive impressions.

Unity is BAD.

Look what happened when the Fundie Christians got together with the Neocon Party Whores?

Now we got a half-million dead, a trillion dollars flushed down the toilet, and If Bush had HIS WAY, there would be no end in sight.

And with all this, Iraq REALLY IS SO PEACEFUL, the Parliament is taking 2 months off.

Sinergy,
i don't think Gore has the personality to win the democratic election. He has the book about global warming but has been shown to defy that. To me, that is all about credibility lmao and we all know about credibility and Bush.

It's not about "Who can win". It's about "When we declare a winner, is it plausable ENOUGH?"

Obama/Anyone isn't plausable enough.
Gore/Obama *might be* plausable enough.
Clinton? I think her day is over, BUT she's still valid enough that enough people would believe an election occurred.

i don't know... wasn't he the one that rented a pickup truck and drove around the state putting on a good ol' boy act? i just can't support that sort of thing (didn't vote for Rootin' Tootin' Dubya, either). At least Gore is honest about being a rich urban weenie.

i figure i'll be "throwing my vote away" on a Libertarian no matter what, so i'm not getting too worked up about the Quest For The Less Noticeable Evil yet. [&:]

Cthulhu for President. Why vote for a lesser evil?

I still believe in a two term limit:  One in Congress and one in prison......

TheHeretic, I dont recall you asking that question.  However, since you asked.  Please review the history of Jello Biafra.  He was famous.  He didnt lose his ideals when he became famous.  He ran for vice President with Ralph Nader in the Green Party.

Not a very good example... by the time he was running for Green Party national positions, he was no longer very active in the music scene, and certainly not as famous as he was at the height of the DKs or the Frankenchrist trial. He was never part of the Hollywood machine. Plus, he would really be a "protest vote"... you don't have to lose your ideals to run, just to run with a chance of winning. And his ideals were a big part of what made him famous.

I'll take your use of an obscure punk rock geek (granted, he wrote some amusing lyrics) as an admission that your earlier assertions (I can hunt down the thread this evening if you like) that we are now seeing the "real" Al Gore was nothing but regurgitated spin from Rolling Stone or some hate-filled talk radio program you listened to.

Jello???  Pigasus was a more viable candidate.

Exactly, it is kinda funny to see people argue about the images that are created for ANY of these people.

As far as "Hollywood" type candidates... anyone ever hear of Ronald Reagan... he WAS an actor. Howabout Charlton Heston. The Govenator. Sonny Bono....on and on and on.

I refuse to defend mere humans, I defend positions. It works better for me that way. And I am certain that whomever gets the nomination will have a corporate American seal of approval stamped on his/her ass

Obviously you have not studied Jello Biafra's actions since he left the Dead Kennedys.  He championed many poltiical stances, most notably the effort to legalize marijuana in the state of California.

I have enough issues with my own opinion, I dont listen to talk radio.  Ever.

There's some good news, and some bad news on Fred Thompson:

Good news:

Thompson mulling summer decision
Mike Allen
April 30, 200

Thompson has not made a final decision but is on track to be ready to announce his candidacy in June or July, his advisers say.

Bad news:

Thompson, his wife and advisers in Washington and Tennessee also are drawing up plans for a new style of campaign that would rely heavily on technology and his celebrity status to avoid some of the slogging through the snow in Iowa and New Hampshire that is normally required of White House hopefuls.

The advisers say Thompson ... " is researching ways to use technology -- including the Web, videoconferences and teleconferences -- to harness the enthusiasm for his candidacy among grass-roots bloggers and activists. The campaign also would rely on large events, such as those that have in part supplanted country-store campaigning for some in the Democratic field.

"Well-known candidates can do things a little differently," explained one adviser. "You show up, you're accessible, but you don't have to go to every county seat several times."

If he thinks he can run a successful campaign by "absenting" himself from real life, I'm afraid he will learn different.

What?
Rudy Guiliani is a Republican?

I lived in Hampton, N.H. which is a summer tourist town right on the coast of New Hampshire.
It was nothing to see all the politicians in town during election time.
Once me and some friends were eating in a restaurant and in walks Al Gore gladhanding everyone.
(I wiped off my hand real good after shaking his.)
I met John McCain twice.
Pat Buchanan (who I like), I saw John Kerry but walked away so he couldn't shake my hand.
I heard that Farah Fawcett had a summer place at the beach but I never saw her.
I WOULD let her shake my hand!
