http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/01/business/worldbusiness/01cnd-oil.html?hp

Lord John Browne of Madingley, an aggressive but mannered British magnate who transformed BP into one of the most successful, global companies, resigned abruptly on Tuesday in a court battle with a tabloid over details of his personal life.

...

In his statement, Mr. Browne said: ‘’Legal documents have been disclosed today containing allegations about me and my personal life. I wish to acknowledge that I did formerly have a four-year relationship with Jeff Chevalier. He has made these allegations about me and our relationship to Associated Newspapers, publishers of The Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday and Evening Standard.

This is probably not the only reason he resigned.  BP has had huge problems lately--the Texas City refinery disaster, the Alaskan oil pipeline leaks, and they've done a horrible job of managing their crude oil reserve portfolio.

They've got really cool commercials though.

Apparently, he has resigned for lying in court and using BP assets as a personal bank account.

Based on what I've read, being gay isn't the issue.

NG is correct (it happens) from what was reported here - the resignation was because he had lied in a court case to protect his private life from being exposed and was intended to prevent embarassment to BP (which says a lot). He was due to retire in July anyway, but by resigning he loses out on approximately USD 30 million.

That being said though, it remains the case that being homosexual (and trans) in the UK workplace, especially in the commercial workplace and at the higher levels, is still not a good career move - even though Browne clearly demonstrates by way of his success that it is no hindrance to running a business well or indeed partipating in one.

um, yes, but being a good businessman involves few ethics, and often the complete absense of any, lying during a court case is a different matter, and should be. it is not a gay issue. it is a perjury/hypocrisy issue, research his record prior to his "lovers" revelations. the mighty sometimes fall, but not often enough in my view, research rent boys in the white house. kate moss does 48 hours in rehab, and the spinners announce she is all better again. no doubt she has been instructed to only take her drugs behind locked doors, in future, to keep raking it in. saunders released from jail on the basis he had alzheimers, then going skiing at aspen. the list is endless. the mighty should fall more often when caught lying, or in major hypocrisy, there would be many fewer mighty. this is a good thing!

Whether this particular case revolves around the fact that the man is/was gay or not, we see similar cases all the time.
The DC Madam, who has recently been a popular news headline, is one such case.  Though it doesn't involve BDSM in any way (to my knowledge) the fact that these supposedly high ranking and successful men have visited/had sexual intercourse with/received massages from supposed prostitues is more than enough to scare Randall Tobias, the head of the US Agency for International Development, into resigning.

My issue, as many of you would no doubt echo, is the fact that a man's actions outside the workplace will dictate how successful he is or how he is thought of inside the workplace.  The DC Madam has used the phone records she has as a tool to try and gain herself immunity, though I doubt it will gain her said immunity.  Thus she is an enabler of the scornful looks that men and/or women may get when their personal life involves something out of the 'ordinary'.
I say hang the bitch and anyone else who enables such actions carried out within one's personal life to be a stain on their career.

can't agree there, the vast bulk of her clientele have probably built their entire career on hypocrisy and falsehood, and devoted their public actions and effort to persecuting those that do the same things they do, but they have kept their participation secret. fuck em, out the fucking lot, every time, no matter their persuasion, if they have made others participation difficult or unlawful, or frowned upon by their influence, they deserve every kind of embarassment, bigtime!

It's a dangerous thing to make assumptions and that's exactly what you've just done.  How could the head of the US Agency for International Development be involved in any 'effort to persecuting those that do the same things'?

m0rgan -> RE: CEO of British Petroleum resigns after being outed (5/4/2007 12:21:11 AM)

um, from a position of, basically, i don't give a shit, the head of any organisation, or those on the way up in any organisation, has colluded in the clamour against the likes of us and the establishment, just to claw their way up the manure pile. dare i say it, currently, the head of every single us department needs a fucking good hiding, and they are unfailingly professional liars, that say one thing with a bible in their hand and a rent boy in their inside pocket! when they are caught out in a lie about a fact, they are proven liars. end of story.

It is a joke, Joe.  British humor is famous for being dry and understated.  [;)]
