Sailor Suits - 5/1/2007 8:52:51 PM

Status: offline 		Hello all. Me and my top are looking for a little boy's sailor suit - in adult size ;) I've only been able to find one on foreverakid.com, but it looks like a cloth bag with a collar. Can someone tell me where I can find a nice one?

Raised in a naval family I have pics of myself as a three year old in cute sailor suits in the fashion of the time. But they were cutdown versions of traditional naval uniforms still in use, if not by our navy, there are plenty of other countries which still use  more period looking uniforms.. I would recommend a real "army navy" "surplus "store the kind servicemen actually buy uniforms and accesories from.

Status: offline 		Do you mean the 'sailor suit' fashion that little boys used to wear, especially in the 19th century in Britain? Which style?

This website seems to have some good information on this particular fashion, as does this one (It'll prompt for a username/password; just press the x in the upper right hand corner, and keep pressing it, and it should go away eventually...it did for me). The second one seems to have a LOT more information, and the first may be a copy off of the second. The images unfortunately do not seem to work on the second link.

You could use images of the original sailor suit (whichever style you prefer), and have a custom suit made to fit you, or make the suit yourself. Making it specifically to you would look sharpest. Below are some images that might help you, and other tidbit links I found.

Patterns for boys' suits of the ages (Ageless Patterns...look through these, there are two sailor suits on the page linked to)

Getting Dressed in Former Times: Hans (12), Germany middle class, 1925 (wearing a traditionally styled sailor suit with a white middy blouse)
Getting Dressed in Former Times: Carl (7), American middle class, 1900 (wearing a light-weight summer sailor suit; this one goes through all the undergarments, too!)
A pattern for a 1910's Boys' Sailor Suit (Saundra Ros Altman's Past Patterns #8609, could be modified for adult?)
Jack Tar suit on a doll (this is a pattern, but for a doll...maybe good for the little boy's doll, depending on if the "little" boy carries a doll...some do, some think it too girly)
Shorts: A Coming Fashion (the sailor suit was a step toward shorts for little boys, having knickerbockers or breeches; talks lots of what a sailor suit is all about for boys)

Status: offline 		After seeing something that said it was a Victorian fashion, I paused...Lolita fashion is based off Victorian fashions for girls, and I remembered there was a male counterpart to that...Ouji, or Oujisama, which is inspired by what was worn by Victorian boys...blouses and shirts, knickerbockers and other styles of short trousers, knee high socks, top hats, and newsboy caps. The Western term for this fashion is Kodona. It is derived from "kodomo otona," literally meaning "child-adult." The term 'Kodona' is not used in Japan, but only in Western culture. This fashion is not as popular as Lolita, though.

So...after remembering this, I did searches for Ouji and Kodona fashions. I didn't find much that way, but did more search and turned up with:

Ouji Style: The male counterpart of Lolita fashion
Schoolboy's Sailor Suit for sale! (not sure the size...)

You can also do searches for knickerbockers and middy blouses, and find both...

Here's a US Navy Middy blouse, on a Army Navy outfitter site
On this page, look at the 2nd pattern under Sports and Leisure Wear for knickerbockers.

That's all I found for now...

I found many different styles by searching google you can even make it an image search based on the same keywords & then link yourself to the site where the picture is located.

the site you mention is more along the lines of a fetish site

You will find more costumes on traditional costume sites. From what I saw it looks as though you can buy the basic sailor out fit & then simply cut the pants to shorts to give it a boyish look.

Status: offline 		Your best bet is to go to a Army/Navy surplus place and buy a Navy Enlisted Dress Uniform (known as Crackerjacks). I suggest white, but blues (actually black) will work, too. Take off all the insignia (you can sell them on ebay, if you want). Alter the pants to make shorts...alter the sleeves to make short sleeves, add blue ribbon as piping (cover the current piping). Find a wide-brim white hat and add matching ribbon. Find white shoes and white socks. Finally, carry one of those BIG lollipops.

It'll take some work, but a good alteration shop should be able to do the job if you don't know how to sew.

Status: offline 		Having worn a real sailor suit for years... try googling Brigade Quartermasters and check out real uniforms.

And, shhhhh, don't tell and blow the macho.  Many Navy men wear pantyhose under the wool uniforms when standing watch.  It keeps you warm and prevents the starched wool gabardine from chaffing.  I preferred black dance tights as they stand up to the laundry better.

Status: offline 		It seems that I was mistaken.  The dress blues can no longer be purchased retail except through a uniform store.  Active duty only.

I did find a source for undress whites if you like... http://sailor-uniform.com/
