cyberdude611 -> Anyone see Hotel Rwanda? (5/1/2007 10:32:32 PM)

I got around to seeing this the other day. It's a very violent film. But all I have to say is that I am ashammed at the west and the United Nations for turning their cheek during that genocide.

And to think the same kind of thing is going on in Sudan right now and no one is paying any attention....

I think it shows just how god damn useless the United Nations really is... The only thing the UN seems concerned with these days is bashing the United States. Meanwhile millions of people are being slaughtered. And to top it off... Sudan gets on the human rights panel? The same panel that kicked the US off a few years ago? What a joke.

You're "ashamed" at "The West" because Africans killed Africans?
Ah,....that doesn't make a lot of sense.
And yes, the "U.N." is absolutely useless!
We (The U.S.) need to get out of it.
I let my congressman and senators know that too and all the staffers agree.
What we don't have in this country right now is Leadership to get us out of a lot of things or to do the things we should be doing.
As for Darfur, Africans need to handle that problem not "The West."
I would MUCH rather see our Troops on that Mexican border where they are needed!

The UN is supposed to stop genocide from happening.

cyberdude, I don't know if that's in their charter or not.
There's one thing they're very good at though and that's stealing money!
Anyone heard if they've found that $22-$24B in Food for Oil money yet?

I was the movie not that long ago.  It is sad that geneocide is allowed to happen like that, but I don't know if the west could practically do anything about it.  There was geneocide in Iraq as well, but in many respects the total damage of geneocide was less than the damage as a result of our interventions.(Yes I know past geneocide was not our primary motive for going into Iraq).  As far  as Rawanda is concerned what should the US or UN done.  You have a large number of people intent on killing others.  It would take a fairly large force to control this perhaps 50 to 100k.  For all practical purposes Rawanda is "in the middle of no where" in that the US or UN have no significant military assets in the area. they would either have to take over a signifiant chunk of the country to make a military base or stage off the coast of tanzinia and run from aircraft carriers over tanzania.

Then if we manage to control the country with lots of force...then what.  It could take a generation or more of peace to stop the hatred, so  the peace keepers  may be stuck for  15 or 20 years, then when Darfur happens, and Somalia, and Iraq, and well sooner or later we, the west, run out of troops, and the people aren't willing to spend so much on the military.

As sad as it is to realize, sometimes we, the west, can not fix everything.  Bad things happen in this world.  It does however make me realize that most any "problems" I am having are trivial, and all things considered I have a good life compared to many, and ought not take that for granted.

While this is true, the issue is that without the United States paying most of the bills and supplying most of the troops on the ground, the UN is unable to do anything.

Fairly easy to see why the UN is doing nothing to stop that genocide.  Our troops are busy inflicting a genocide of our own.

And what the hell is a "peacekeeper" anyway?
It sounds like one of those politically correct words.
And it makes no sense to use soldiers as "peacekeepers."
What if a bunch of Chinese were killing another bunch of Chinese and "The West" didn't do anything about that?
Would you feel "ashamed" about that?
