" Los Angeles can continue being the butt of smog jokes now that it has once again topped the American Lung Association's bad air list of most polluted cities in America.

The association found that the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Riverside metropolitan area had the worst air based on 2003 through 2005 figures.

The Pittsburgh area was ranked as the nation's second most polluted metropolitan area followed by Bakersfield, Calif., Birmingham, Ala., Detroit and Cleveland. Visalia, Calif., Cincinnati, Indianapolis and

In the heat of the day
Every time you go away
I have to piece my life together
Every time you're away
In the heat of the day
In the dark of the night
Every time I turn the light
I feel that God is not in heaven
In the dark of the night
The dark of the night

I wonder why I live alone here
I wonder why we spend these nights together
Is this the room I'll live my life forever
I wonder why in LA
To live and die in LA
I wonder why we waste our lives here
When we could run away to paradise
But I am held in some invisible vice
And I can't get away
To live and die in LA

If I let myself go
And for where I just don't know
I'd maybe hit some cold new river
That led out to the sea
An unknown sea
I'd either swim or I'd drown
Or just keep falling down and down
I think its that, that makes me quiver
Just to keep falling down
Down, down, down

I wonder why I live alone here
I wonder why we spend these nights together
Is this the way I'll live my life forever
I wonder why in LA
To live and die in LA

In every word that you say
I feel my freedom slip away
I feel the bars come down around me
And I can't get away
I can't get away

I wonder why I live alone here
I wonder why we spend these nights together
Is this the room I'll live my life forever
I wonder why in LA
To live and die in LA
I wonder why we waste our lives here
When we could run away to paradise
But I am held in some invisible vice
And I can't get away
To live and die in LA

I can't get away
To live and die in LA
I can't get away
To live and die in LA
I can't get away
To live and die in LA
I can't get away
To live and die in LA

Sorry...... but it's just not in me to dis LA

After spending time there, it just is not in me to dis it either.

Perhaps when they switch to electric and quit using diesel to navigate into the harbor and for the machinery that off loads ships, it will be cleaner in Long Beach.

China Shipping eliminated all their diesel engines.  And is researching the technology to plug the ship in to the dock so it doesnt have to idle while docked.  Expect the rest to follow...

California also passed a law preventing the shipping companies from burning bunker fuel within 100 miles of the harbor.  Now when they idle they are using regular high-efficiency / lower particulate gas instead of the nasty goop they used to burn.

air quality in PA has a ways to go. while it is nothing urbanlike- for odd reasons visitors and locals get alot of sinus problems.  an older freind of mine said you never seeen so much in the 50s.

i blame to power plamts in ohio. while to globe is bickeringh over global warming- may i remind you the us has gutted the clean air standards? and acid rain is alive and well in PA nad canada

From what I can tell as a frequent visitor, the air quality in Los Angeles has improved somewhat
over the years.  And there is new progress in terms of cleaner energy methods.   I enjoy all of the
big city attractions and my friends who live in So Cal.  But as an asthmatic, living there or anywhere
else with high levels of air pollution is just not in the realm of possibilities.

traffic in LA is horrendous. but much of the US is catching up in terms of road congestion. it really has gotten bad over the past 20 years.

i80 from NY to Chicago. is pretty much bumper to bumper most the summer. many of it is semi trucks. ive been on that road many many times.

alot of places in teh usa- ppl stopped going to- due to volumn of traffic.

I was there years ago. God, it STUNK!
People who live there are probably used to the smell but when I got back home I could even smell it in my clothes and I'm a smoker.

i did not realize at the time one wasnt supposed to drink the water, [tar pits] i got a horrible sore throat. the smog was bad in LA, but i cant say it is any worse then Chicago or New York.  in fact- driving from tennesea north to chicago 100 miles away you can see the cloud of haze, no joke. when they say a suny day in chicago it is hard to tell- maybe 40 mitues of sun.  when u look up at the sky it should be blue. the bluer the better. if too many days are not like this then  the smog is bad.

Air quality was nicer until everybody and their dog bought an SUV, a Hummer, a Truck, a CUV, or any of the other types of automobiles that are not affected by the federal and state standards for air quality, and not required to have a catalytic converter.
