BlackSakura -> Where can I learn about the different protocols?? (5/2/2007 11:46:17 AM)

Ok, I am slowly learning about the different “kinds”, “types”, or “schools of thought” on BDSM; such as Old Guard, Gorean, etc.  But I am still unclear about them all.  Where can I go (online) that will give me a description of the different teachings and protocol?
Thank you all!

Greetings,

If you wish to learn about Gor buy the books and actually read them.

Some debate whether or not Old Gaurd even existed.

Protocol in general can be learned through a book of etiquette such as Emily Post. What you learned in kindergarten will also go along way. If it's not yours, don't touch it. Play nice with others and keep your voice down so you don't disturb others. If in doubt ask.

There is no universal accepted concept of "protocol" (i.e. rule book) this is why you won't find a book on the shelf or a web site online that claims to be the know all to protocol on any modality.

You can pick any of the modalities, you mentioned two.. Old Guard & Gorean... & you will find one group who identifies as Old Guard & find they don't agree with another group that identifies as Old Guard..... & so on & so on.

There are basic principles that many can agree on & most will agree that protocol is pretty much open to interpretation & is very much based on personal choice.

Sakura

For every person there is a different set of protocals.

For every relationship there is a different set of protocals

For every community there is a different set of protocals

You learn by interacting with others.  But remember.. what works with one... may not be the case with another.

Very well said.  Regardless of what you learn and read, someone will misinterpret it lol.

Thank you all!!!  Yay ^_^

Kalbar -> RE: Where can I learn about the different protocols?? (5/3/2007 1:32:51 AM)

Contrary, probably, to Melissa, I would suggest buying the Gorean books but not paying too much attention to every detail within them.  They are in the end 25 fictional novels that are poorly written.  Pay more attention to the core beliefs within them.
As KnightMists said, when it comes to positions/protocol or what not, each Master will expect you to learn whichever positions/protocols he has use for.  I'll also echo that the best way to learn anything is to interact with those that are in the know.

Edit
Oops.  I was foolish enough to make the assumption that you were a sub.  Sorry.

Dastardly -> RE: Where can I learn about the different protocols?? (5/3/2007 1:45:04 AM)

And hey BlackSakura, just when you think you've got it down pat and you know what the right way is, someone will come along and disagree with you LOL. So read as much as you can but be aware that in all this ultimately you find your own road.

Good luck on your travels

It is great to read about protocols however but interaction others is a vital part of growth and understanding of what you want as a Top or as sub/slave/bottom.  Anyway there is an NLA chapter in Austin here is the link for you.  http://www.nla-austin.org/
Good Luck

SimplyMichael -> RE: Where can I learn about the different protocols?? (5/3/2007 7:51:19 AM)

Midori says it best in her book Wild Side Sex "A successful set of protocol serves the greater purpose and needs of the relationship and the community that the relationship functions within."

Elorin -> RE: Where can I learn about the different protocols?? (5/3/2007 6:46:10 PM)

Madame Butterfly
Thanks for the link. The book I linked to was written by one of the members of NLA Austin. Unfortunately, NLA Austin folded about 3 years ago. Prior to that I enjoyed attending many of their meetings.
